In this last week of Disability Pride Month, we want to highlight the importance of including accessibility for Disabled families in active travel and environmental improvements. Check out this recent blog by our Campaigns and Policy Lead Kate on the subject: www.cyclesprog.co.uk/inspiration/...

The right cycle for the journey: cycling with disabled children

From rear-steer tandems to e-bikes, Kate Ball shares practical advice on cycling with disabled children for everyday journeys.

A clear explanation of why some "legality" tests catch legal cycles, upon which many Disabled people rely. We're delighted to be working with forces and training providers to solve this problem while helping address the danger caused by illegal e-motorbikes shorturl.at/9roas

Birmingham man's legal e-bike seized and destroyed by police in error

The BBC finds the bike was legal and supplied as part of a scheme to reduce pollution in the city.

Cycling with disabled children isn't just "can they ride a bike?" It's whether they can make the actual journey needed. Kate Ball shares her family's story: rear-steer tandems, trikes, e-tandems, and years of trial and error. www.cyclesprog.co.uk/inspiration/... @wheelsforwellbeing.org.uk

Yesterday our Campaigns & Policy Lead @benwheels.bsky.social attended the @appgcw.bsky.social to discuss #CWIS3 with @liliangreenwood.bsky.social. Pleased to hear about action on #PavementParking and mobility devices law, but nothing about the #ActivityTrap for #DisabledPeople.

Yesterday @appgcw.bsky.social meet w/ @liliangreenwood.bsky.social. Focus on #CWIS3. ✅reiterated commitmt 2 sort out Mobility Aid law ✅Pavemt Parking action But nothin more 2 help #Disabled ppl be more physically active. Need 2 end "activity trap": Disabled ppl fear losing bfits by getting active.

We are delighted to support the fabulous, 'Everyday Cyclist' exhibition, on the 9th of July, 4-6pm, in Brockwell Park, offering a variety of cycles for people to ride & a cycle taxi service from outside the lido next to the carpark (side-by-side and wheelchair carrying platform trike).

A poster featuring a vibrant photo of a tan skinned woman with long dark hair, in a red dress sitting, facing the camera, on the rear of a tricycle. The background is of a leafy, park setting.

The poster reads, 'Free exhibitions of The Everyday Cyclist by Becky Mursell Photographt, 8th July- 31st August 2026, Brockwell Hall and Brockwell Park (outdoors by the lido). '

It also provides details of a 'Celebration event' on July 9th, between 4-6pm at the Stables Courtyard, Brockwell Hall, featuring free 'Try a Cycle' sessions with Wheels for Wellbeing and a free 'Wooden Bike Build activity with upCYCLE LDN, alll free to attend with no need to book.

At the base, the logos of Wheels for Wellbeing, Brockwell Park and the Heritage fund are visible.

The further a journey is, the more barriers Disabled people will usually face to completing it. Moving about in our own homes is usually much easier than making a longer trip around our own communities. Her are some of the barriers many Disabled people experience. What barriers do you face?

A very busy graphic showing, from top to bottom, increasing distance required for activities from tens to hundreds to thousands of metres per trip and a range of the cumulative barriers likely to be encountered on increasing length trips.

From shortest to longest, activities are moving around own home, moving from home to car/taxi, getting to a bus stop, getting to/around a supermarket/hospital, attending work/education - moving within organisation sites plus commute using public transport, taking children out to nursery/school/activities and play including carrying tired/Disabled children, taking part in local democracy, eg. Standing for election, canvassing, walkabouts, campaigning.

Associated with the activities cumulative from top to bottom are stairs, broken lift, narrow doors, limited manoeuvring space, need to make trips in tight timeframes, narrow/obstructed paths, need to be supported &/or support others, few fixed supports, difficult weather- wind/ice/heat/rain, poor/uneven surfaces, injury risk from drivers, need to carry items/equipment longer distances, risk of harassment/abuse, inaccessible bus stop, inaccessible bus, risk of falling on moving public transport, noise, crowds, need to address workplace inaccessibility conflicting with need to maintain good relationships with those in power, organisational expectations including timings, personal appearance etc, support needs of children, moving on unmade surfaces (grass, bark, gravel, mud), need to approach many private, often inaccessible homes, increased risk of harassment/abuse.

We were delighted to welcome Cllr Laura Sessions (Active Travel Lead at Lewisham Council) at our Ladywell Inclusive Cycling Hub. She got to try out one of our Side-by-Side tandems and chat with our participants about the joy they experience when accessing the right cycle and the right support.

The photo depicts Councillor Laura Sessions, a white lady with blond hair, cycling on a red, side-by-side handcycle in the carpark at Ladywell Day Centre alongside Kenneth, one of our instructors. They are both smiling broadly. In the background, you can see the blurred image of several others on tricycles.

Last but not least, the third in our series of free webinars, covering Disabled people and micromobilities 🥳: what they are, how enabling they can be for Disabled people, barriers caused by outdated laws & what changes we are advocating for. 👇👇👇

"𝗔 𝗠𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗲𝗹𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗪𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴

For the first time in over 10 years, our session fee will be changing.

From 1 June 2026, increasing from £5 to £𝟳 𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝘆𝗰𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗿. PAs, carers and supporters will continue to attend free of charge.

We have tried to avoid increasing our prices for as long as possible, but the costs of running our sessions have continued to rise. Each hour now costs us over £15 per participant to provide, so even with this increase, every session will still be heavily subsidised.

We continue to apply for grants and support from funders to help cover the difference. However, like many charities, it is becoming harder to secure funding in the current climate. We also rely on donations from individuals and companies to help keep our sessions running and accessible.

If you are able to contribute the full cost of a session or support additional attendees, please consider also making a donation when you book

If you know anyone who is looking for a charity to support, we would be very grateful if you could suggest Wheels for Wellbeing. Donations can be made through our website, or by contacting us on 020 7346 8482.
We understand that any increase in cost can be difficult. If the new session fee will cause you concern or make it harder for you to attend, please contact us to discuss.

Thank you for your understanding and continued support."
