This is a fifth instar monarch caterpillar. I startled it when I put clean milkweed in the tank and so it decided to play dead. They aren’t very palatable because of the toxins they get for milkweed but they’re not impervious to dangers #macromonday #monarch #vertebrate

The monarch butterfly eggs hatch in about five days into tiny first instar caterpillars. The monarch lays one egg per plant usually because they eat an awful lot. This tiny little white caterpillar with a black head turns around and eats the egg shell. #wildlifephotography #macromonday #monarch
