In spite of the shocking price I'm considering getting a Nintendo Switch 2. I'd welcome suggestions for low-stress games suitable for old farts. I tried Zelda and it was too much. So nothing with combat or requiring the reflexes of a cat. Something from a genre I believe is called 'Cozy Games'.

I applied for a blue disabled parking badge weeks ago. Today an occupational therapist came round to discuss my application & check my physical difficulties. A lovely helpful woman who was very understanding of chronic fatigue syndrome. I still don't know if I'll get the badge.

We just had a power cut. Not a normal power cut, but power went off, came back on, went off again, repeatedly. You know what happens to smart bulbs with they're turned off & on several times in quick succession? 😫😫😫

Happy Monday, everybody! This week, have you considered voting early (if you can) and voting in person (if you can)? It's fun! Try it if you can!

I saw this monstrosity in The Range this morning. It was playing Chr*stmas tunes in a tinny distorted imitation of a music box. Except one tune it played was The Red Flag. Someone with more money than taste is going to pay £100 for it.

Ghastly Christmas Musical lamppost thing seen in The Range.

Usually when security researchers find a vulnerability they don’t broadcast it, instead giving owners of vulnerable tools time to issue a fix. This doesn’t seem to have happened this time. Why not? www.theguardian.com/technology/2...

Businesses replacing employees with AI is going to be 'The Tragedy of the Commons' allover again. If something doesn't change whole economies will collapse as everyone will be unemployed & won't have the money to buy anything.

Just read that Barclays are going to be making 5k job cuts before Christmas. Thanks to AI. “Merry Christmas From Barclays” So all the money they’re going to save…will that mean better deals with banks? Less charges etc? Will it fuck.

Throughout my career as a software developer I wanted to write beautiful applications using beautiful code. I wanted my work to look beautiful inside even if few would ever see the source code. In the 35 years I worked in the industry I never found a beautiful language.

eBay users! Don't ignore today's email, even though it looks like a boring standard update to the User Privacy Notice. They want to use your data to train AI models. If you click the link over the words "the right to object", it takes you to a page with a toggle button letting you opt out.

Screenshot from a section of eBay UK's r User Privacy Notice.
It reads:
AI model training

When training, testing, and improving generative AI models, we rely primarily on publicly available data. Some public datasets may incidentally include personal data, and in some cases we may also use certain user personal data, such as information about your use of our Services, including the items you list, sell, view, or buy, where we determine it is necessary and proportionate for a specific use (for example, to train AI models that improve product recommendations). Prior to training, we take steps to mitigate potential privacy impacts, such as de-identifying the data or applying other privacy-preserving techniques. In some jurisdictions, the data used for training as described in this section is not considered personal data; where our AI training does involve personal data as defined under applicable law, including in the European Economic Area (EEA), Switzerland, and the United Kingdom, the legal basis of our legitimate interest is set out in section 3.4.

See section 6 for more details on your rights. To learn more about specific training use cases and our processing of your personal data for generative AI training purposes, including the right to object to such processing for certain users, visit our Artificial Intelligence at eBay page.

Reform UK might as well admit they’re a racist party for racist voters, just like National Front back in the day. I really hope there aren’t enough voters racist enough to elect them though. I hope Brits can do a lot better than that.
