Why can loved ones who misdial you never hear you answering the call and shouting their name, when *you* can hear *them* clear as a bell breathing and pressing more wrong buttons and narrating their tech fail to whoever's in the room with them?

Do you note how “we’re going to round up and mass deport a million people” is rarely received with either visceral disgust or screaming, puking fury? How it’s considered instead in terms of its potential appeal to the public.

Confirmation that a Reform UK government would mean Ice-style mass roundups and deportations. In fact, in one way the Reform plan would go further than Trump, in retrospectively stripping rights from people granted asylum as long as five years ago and tracking them down for removal. 1/2

It's another policy which feels most likely to appeal solely to the 20% or so Reform core vote, and also to harden other voters' resolve to vote however is needed to keep out a Reform government - as do many of their recent announcements.

TFW you've got a ridiculously large collection of pretty boxes because when you get a gift you keep gift & box ("might come in handy") but when you actually do use a box to put a gift in, the recipient hands the box back to you 😭 we need some kind of international standard procedure for this stuff

Woken by my alarm from a dream in which I was telling David Bowie how much I liked his little-known early song "Crab Currency".

Hi, I’m a sighted alt text user! Here are some reasons I use it: - Slow Internet on an airplane - I’m over 40, I have no idea who that celebrity is - Bluesky broke images again - My vision sucks and that text is too small to read otherwise - Conveys further context and authorial intent

Stationery Bluesky! How/where do I buy the little card tabs in this picture? I already own an accordion-style organiser & want fresh tabs for it. I do not want: - anything sticky - to buy a new organiser! Have looked online and searched a real branch of used-to-be-WHSmith but drawn a blank.

Wonky pic I snapped in WHSmith showing an accordion-style organiser with perforated cardboard tabs on top of it.

Found the email I sent when I got accidentally added to the faculty listserv of an orthopedic surgery clinic and nobody would remove me so I sent this email to all faculty/staff/med students and they removed me almost immediately

Hello Bone Colleagues,
I have invented a new type of ankle and I'm very excited to show it to you. Early raccoon trials suggest a 60% increase in scurrying speed and dramatic increases in fine motor banditry. I know we are not supposed to create super raccoons, but I think you'll change your mind and professional ethics when you see how cute they are. I believe we are on the cusp of a new era in advanced human scurrying because if medical science has taught me anything, it's that improvements in raccoons correspond 1:1 to improvements in humans.

I say, it really is a stroke of luck that the big energy companies hadn't finished moving away from fossil fuels when data centre demand rocketed. Imagine what a pickle we'd be in if they'd dismantled their extraction gubbins a year or two BEFORE we needed peaker plants to help us write emails!

Put it this way: if the Greens, Kneecap and Gary Lineker are prompting enraged all-channels screaming fury but e.g. an army seizing, depopulating and ethnically cleansing southern Lebanon of its racially undesirable populace doesn’t make anyone blink, then I am going to conclude - bullshit

This is your occasional reminder that generative "AI" in particular could have been developed on public domain materials and/or licensed and compensated works but the major players intentionally, methodically and systemically chose to steal labor from working creative folks instead

"Ah, so they give you an image of where the words are gonna go and ask you to write them?" oh dear me no they commission you to write the stuff and you unsuccessfully beg for a copy of the design and then you finally get an idea of the wordcount when they tell you you wrote too much

I still think about the conversation I had with an uber driver Him: so what do you do Me: I’m a video game writer Him: wait, video games? They have writing? What do you write? Me: you know when you open up a game and you see the words? Him: yeah? Me: those

the THRILL of being in a non customer-facing part of a business and seeing the internal signage that only employees are supposed to see. I love when they're from corporate with a logo on the bottom, I love when they're handwritten, I LOVE when they're a palimpsest of evolving procedures.

Have you noticed, lately, or noticed people around you commenting, that there just seems to be no money anymore. There's no money for companies to make the tv shows you like, the video games you like, the local diner you like shut down, no one you know can find a job. Think about that in context of

AI is now the biggest investment in all of US history as a percentage of GDP. Datacenter construction is up, all other construction is down. "AI Is Squeezing Out the Rest of the Stock Market," reported WSJ 2 days ago. We basically bet the whole economy on the most optimistic visions panning out.
