Former modder turned washed up former gamedev. This is not a serious account. Do not follow me here for gamedev hot takes or progressposting.

I'm going through the old Ace Combat 6 promotional website on the web archive and saving all the images because it's a great website with a ton of screenshots, and it's a very photogenic game. This screenshot in particular I remember being absolutely amazed at the time that it was a screenshot.

Ace Combat 6 screenshot of a Su-33. Very shiny in a 2007 way. I'm also realizing looking at all these screenshots that I think every Ace Combat has like, a "theme color" and I think 6's might have been pink. The sun is pink in this game, so in most screenshots on most levels, you get a very soft pink for the highlights.

I'm very sure that nobody can be bothered, but I wonder what it would take to bring back or re-release the Jane's games. The whole Jane's Combat Simulations brand must have been a weird and probably(?) expensive license for EA to maintain.

Praying for a fire sale on the insane depth of properties that EA is sitting on. Even in just my little corner of niche interests, it's wild how much they created, bought, and then destroyed.

My monitor seems to have been so thoroughly knackered by dithering that it doesn't even look like dithering anymore. It's just this weird cloth-like noise pattern instead of ordered pixels.

Photo of my monitor with a black hexagon that is supposed to be an ordered bayer dither but it just looks like noise.

Finished(?) nophenia, which I would describe as an interactive porfolio for environment art. Absolute master class in a very specific kind of surreal and dreamy ultra-low fidelity environments that pulls out all the classical tricks, especially for distant "skybox" scenery. Gorgeous game.

Gloomy apartments with criss-crossing wires and a lot of fog. There's a huge moon in the sky.Train car with a flooded floor. Fish and butterflies are floating through it light streams in from the left side windows, covered in lilies. One of my favorite environments. It's a night time park plaza surrounded by apartment block buildings and criss-crossing wires. One of the "joke" environments is the old Windows maze screensaver complete with red brick walls and occasional wallpaper wall.

New video game review metric: Time Until Gameplay. How long it takes from launching a game, to being given control of the core gameplay.

Played through Star Fox 64 for the first time in like, probably 20 years or something. I still think it suffers from all the problems that made me dislike back in the day, but I can appreciate the cool stuff it does way more now. It's a very focused game, and surprisingly cinematic.

The Star Fox 64 end card that's a really cute way to show your final score as an invoice since the Star Fox guys are a mercenary unit.

I want to see more flying games brave enough to have my favorite anti-fun mechanic of fuel and fuel management. I know it's almost unanimously hated. I know it creates a lot of design problems. I love it.

Screenshot from the simlite game Over G Fighters which had a fuel gauge and mechanic to it. In most missions it's not really something you have to pay attention to, but on longer missions you might not want to afterburn everywhere as fast as possible and try to save fuel. It also makes for some sweaty returns home in the Arena mode when you might have used too much fuel dogfighting and aren't sure you can make it back.

I know this would be very legally "Not Okay" but I think it would be so much fun to have game jams themed around using specific SFX packs from specific popular games. Half-Life is the first game that comes to mind for this sort of thing, but you could apply it so many games.

I am in love with Diesel Railcar Simulator. What a charmingly straightforward and easy to play game that is also barely even a game by the modern definition, but I don't care because I just really like driving the trains.

Cab of one of the titular diesel railcars. I always have a hard time keeping the names of these things straight because it's just numbers. They should have named them cool things like they did their planes. By the way I DO know that's a Class 03 I'm looking at out the window because in Derail Valley that's (almost) what the DM3 was based on.Class 03 pulling a couple cars on passenger service backwards. I don't know why it's backwards. It's also slow. Like, very slow, but it has a manual transmission kind of like a car so it's fun to drive. One of the diesel railcars (I think this was like 4 or 5 cars long?) waiting at an urban station before setting out.Single railcar off in the English countryside with town names that sound like they were made up as a joke but also might be real?

It's hard to overstate how formative an experience Massassi Temple was for me. It was the first time I ever played with mods for a game. The majority of my time with that game was browsing the site, downloading levels for Jedi Knight and running through them. It colored my view of games for life.

So here's a piece about a long-running Jedi Knight fansite that's also kinda about the Internet as a whole, charting the boom and bust of the dotcom era, and mourning a web that doesn't really exist any more. www.pcgamer.com/games/action...

Something both Derail Valley and Diesel Railcar Sim both have is a great sense of speed. 60 mph feels like you're flying in those games. Something about the scale of the world around you, plus good camera movement, and audio cues that change in frequency depending on speed I think.

Unrelated to my last post, but I did some proper AMRAAM slinging BVR for the first time in a very long time and uh, yeah it's as boring as I remember it being. If everybody does it right, we all go home with no kills and no missiles. People only die when there's mistakes, and you never see anything.

F-16 cockpit in DCS World on my way home at a leisurely Mach 1.87 at 50k feet after shooting AMRAAMs at stuff while flying at like Mach 1.5 or something.

It is so funny and sad how scared DCS server owners are of the MiG-29 when it is so much worse, and so much more dangerous to fly, than every 4th generation fighter, and in some ways, even most 3rd generation fighters in DCS. I love the plane and all its oddities, but man it is an uphill battle.

MiG-29 in DCS World with R-27ERs and R-73s. The ERs are a weird weapon because they only really exist in a world where everybody else is slinging AMRAAMs. I tend to play on servers with older weapons, so I rarely see these myself. They're surprisingly fast, and can in some very situations outrun an AMRAAM, but that's only really survivable against bad shots.

I've finished updating my good old GunsAndBullets2 code that I'm constantly referencing and reusing. The main new features are Rigidbody bullets and draggy bullets, but there's a ton of other little fixes, improvements, and optimizations.
