was excited that i was supposed to be hosting trivia in town tonight and was going to miss the inevitable Paul Skenes Incident but trivia got rained out
you will not catch me defending ozuna and he's so limited as a player that there's no room for him on the roster, but since about may 1 he's been more "predictably worse than last year" than "the worst expenditure of money in franchise history"
i have a pet theory that the main reason the pirates signed ozuna rather than to do nothing was to emphatically close the door to 'cutch (i really wonder how good of a teammate he was the last couple years).
they weren't gonna sweep the brewers again but that was real uninspiring
two horrible at-bats by reynolds and valdez in completely opposite ways. the full dogshit spectrum.

finally saw the odyssey and i know no one needs more odyssey discourse, but i would primarily say that i think that nolan understood the purpose of adapting a story like that in all the ways i was talking about a couple weeks ago
last thing i'd say as a gut reaction to the deadline: i'd say the NL roughly breaks down right now into a race for the last bye (atlanta vs. milwaukee) and the last two wild card spots (PHI, ARI, SD, probably PIT, and maybe MIA).
one more thing about the deadline: people keep saying things that imply that ben cherington is gonna get fired if the pirates don't make the playoffs, but (to his credit) he didn't behave like somebody who thinks his job is on the line yesterday.
the pirates also *could* choose to put dotel in the rotation and keep mlodzinski in the bullpen as a swingman and i'd listen to an argument for that, but that's overthinking it, IMO. mlodzinski is a better starter, dotel's stuff looks like bullpen stuff to me.
the main thing the pirates need to do right now is stop the bleeding (and wins like last night and saturday go a ways towards doing that, we'll have to treat sunday like a blip due to keller's injury), but at some point they have to rip off about 12 wins in 16 games and the runway is getting short

a couple minutes late on this but the pitch that montgomery threw that got chourio to end the game was absurd. not convinced he's not still the pirates' best reliever, even when weaver shows up.
the game sure develops differently when gregory soto comes in in the sixth inning instead of the ninth
