It is hard to overstate how critical @ncar-ucar.bsky.social is to climate science in the US and around the world. It's the beating heart of our field. Generations of scientists have trained there, and almost everyone I know relies on deep collaborations with NCAR scientists. It's end is unthinkable.

Exclusive: The Trump administration is moving to dismantle the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Colorado, according to a senior White House official, taking aim at one of the world's leading climate research labs.

After 2 years of war, 98% of tree cropland and 75% of greenhouses in Gaza have been destroyed. Remote sensing maps tracking the progression of damage can help identify the best ways to remediate the land & rebuild Gaza’s agricultural sector. #AGU25 My latest for @eos.org: eos.org/articles/98-...

98% of Gaza’s Tree Cropland Destroyed by Israel - Eos

Maps based on remote sensing analysis could inform remediation efforts by identifying whether agricultural lands were damaged by bombs, debris, or forced displacement of its caretakers.

Proud to share our new paper in npj Clim. Atmos. Sci. (@SpringerNature)! Our findings: 1️⃣ reduce uncertainty in mid-latitude climate projections 2️⃣ increase confidence that #ClimateModels correctly predict a future poleward shift of the #JetStream Read the paper here 👉 rdcu.be/eS73b #ClimateScience

A rather pointed Opinion piece in Frontiers & a totally bizarre situation. Nature Geoscience published a 2024 claim of dark O2 production on the Pacific seafloor. There were several obvious problems with the work & multiple lines of argument that it wasn't correct www.frontiersin.org/journals/mar...

Frontiers | Extraordinary Claims Require Extraordinary Evidence: Evaluating Nodule-Associated Dark Oxygen Production

Dark oxygen production (DOP) broadly encompasses all light-independent pathways that produce oxygen (Ruff et al., 2024), including microbial and abiotic proc...

I love how being a librarian means I'm learning new things *all* the time. I've got a PhD in oceanography, but this morning I was answering a reference question & learned about ocean spiciness & how seawater can be "spicy" or "minty." 😍 TY to the person who asked about velocities of deep currents. 🌊

Seeking a three year postdoc in the field of ocean biogeochemistry and productivity using mechanistic models and synthesis of observations. Note the short fuse for applications. Please help distribute. All nationalities welcome to apply! 🌊 www.jobs.ac.uk/job/DPG117/p...

In Science, a new reconstruction of global sea levels spanning the past 4.5 million years reveals that oceans once stood up to 20 meters higher than today and links the waxing and waning of ancient ice sheets to shifts in Earth’s temperature and carbon dioxide cycles. https://scim.ag/42STXUm

Global mean sea level over the past 4.5 million years

Changes in global mean sea level (GMSL) during the late Cenozoic remain uncertain. We use a reconstruction of changes in δ18O of seawater to reconstruct GMSL since 4.5 million years ago (Ma) that acco...

The Rainfall Observers Over the past three centuries, thousands of people across the British & Irish Isles have recorded rainfall, often every day for decades. Here we recognise some of the individuals who made particularly important contributions. rmets.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/...

The rainfall observers

Over the past three centuries, thousands of people across the British and Irish Isles have regularly recorded rainfall, often every day for decades. Their efforts allow us to reconstruct long-term tr...
