100 years of July sea surface temperature anomalies... you'll see important patterns of regional climate variability as the animation evolves, but ultimately, the story behind the long-term trend toward record warmth is driven by human-caused climate change. Data from @noaa.gov ERSSTv6. 🌊
Some review/response letters I see as a reviewer/editor are really long, 40+ pgs. This usually happens when a reviewer wrote lots of major & line-by-line comments. I'm not sure this is ever useful. When there are >10 major comments, maybe just bullet point those and let authors rewrite #peerreview
When we interview candidates for university, standard questions tend to get similar answers from all candidates. So, each year I think of a new question which might reveal something. This year's worked well: "How much do you use #AI in your studies and how has this affected your intelligence?"
Count Binface, a guy dressed as a bin, is one of the wittiest politicians standing for election in the UK. Apparently, he's also one of the sharpest intellectually which says a lot really 😆👍
Under a Binface government, anyone who doesn’t accept human-made climate change as fact will be sent back to school, from Year 1 right the way to A Levels, to see if anything goes in the second time round. #VoteBinface
13. Hence our dismal conclusion: rather than finding that LLMs free us to do a better job of what we were doing before they came along, they shift scientific incentives (and the playing field of academic competition) in ways that compel us to do more and more, faster and faster, less and less well.

The harassing of Dr #Fauci is a circus, an appalling spectacle of "libertarian" politicians with anti-vaccine agendas publicly abusing a public servant for providing fact-based policy advice. This was not a hearing, it was tirade of irrelevant, misleading and often fabricated nonsense.
BREAKING: Former Covid czar Anthony Fauci invoked his Fifth Amendment right at the Senate hearing on the pandemic.

If you're a journalist reporting 4 Palestinians were killed after "an attack on Israeli civilians who were hiking" in the west bank... then you are in fact not a journalist. Do you go hiking with guns into other people's villages early in the morning? No? Me neither... www.bbc.com/news/article...

Palestinians say villagers came under attack by settlers, while the Israeli military says a Palestinian stole a weapon and opened fire on hikers.

A critical ethical problem with gene editing: If a lab takes donations to gene edit children, should this be noted as a potential conflict of interest when reporting related results? If you think "Of course- it is a direct conflict of interest", then some labs and hospitals disagree with you...

The claim “RFK Jr. does not fuck chickens” is not an evidence-based claim because studies have not ruled out the possibility that RFK Jr. fucks chickens.

I really don't get professors (esp. older ones) who push students straight to GenAI models for data analysis, saying, "Yes, it makes mistakes, but you can quality-control the output." And how would a student who doesn't have the foundations is supposed to do that? #AcademicSky

Yup. Canadian wildfires are expected to worsen in the future, as our warming climate increases their frequency and severity. This is pretty much a statement of fact. Sadly.

The latest #NSF regulations on China seem to have been widely misreported. The bans mainly cover companies and only appear to name about 30 universities or research institutes mainly in defense, aerospace, electronics and materials science. For context, there are about 3000 universities in China.
Last week, the National Science Foundation announced a new policy barring NSF funds from being used for collaborations with entities determined by other U.S. agencies to be threats to national security, including nearly all Chinese research institutions. 🧵👇 www.nsf.gov/funding/info...
Sadly, it’s no surprise that climate change is making El Niño events more ferocious. 🌊 Here’s IPCC AR6 Box 11.4 saying that extreme El Niños occur more frequently in a warming world. ⤵️ Still, the exceedance magnitude of this summer’s event beyond all previous events is eye opening. 👀
With all the July model runs now in, it is very likely that 2026 will see the largest El Niño event since records began in the late 1800s – and potentially by a truly mind-blowing margin. The median estimate is now 3.6C, roughly 0.8C hotter than the prior record (2.75C). www.theclimatebrink....
