“Beneath the good and the kind and the stupid and the cruel, there’s a fire just waiting for fuel” Always in the mood for Ani’s singular voice and one-of-one guitar playing (plus the horns on this album just rule so hard) 🧡

I love Liz’s guitars on this record so much. What a never-miss midday bump of awesomeness. “When they do the double-dutch that’s them dancing”
Friendly reminder that Juliana Hatfield is a god, she landed a radio/MTV hit in 5/4 time, and her awesome video features a fun cameo by the super rad @tanyadonelly.bsky.social getting a smooch from Steve Zahn! Plus some Ethan Hawke, a blond Janeane Garofalo, and Scott Thompson from Kids in the Hall!
Sometimes you buy an album simply because it’s the only place to hear Paul Westerberg cover some acoustic AM gold (Jonathan Edwards’ “Sunshine”). Okay, the R.E.M., k.d. lang, Pretenders, Toad, and Grant Lee Buffalo tracks are pretty stellar too ☕️
If you’re looking for a little more Alice In Chains ‘MTV Unplugged’ 30th anniversary goodness, don’t miss my Unplugged Revisited episode with Mike Inez from last year. He had so many cool stories and EVEN MORE “friends don’t let friends get Friends haircuts” lore! podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/u...
So incredibly happy to see that this absolute beauty is getting a proper repressing! Pre-orders are up now for the September 25 release. Easily one of the hands down best episodes in the show’s whole run. vinyl.sonymusic.com/products/ali...
Amongst all the other Glen-related memories flooding me today, I got another chuckle out of one of my Frames cds that originally came with a misapplied hype sticker… though, in their own special way, maybe The Frames somehow really were “THE pioneers of epic doom metal”
In light of Glen Hansard’s shocking passing, No Depression is running an online version of my 2022 print piece where I talked to Glen and Marketa about the art of busking and the 15th anniversary of ‘Once’ that inspired their reunion tour. nodepression.org/street-style...
Aw man, such incredibly sad news about Glen Hansard! What a huge loss of poetic curiosity, vocal peerlessness, musical creativity, and genuine connective kindness. He turned our 45-minute interview into a two-hour hang and had the greatest boom of a laugh. youtu.be/FCxT0CnOq9s

Here’s to 40 years of Lifes Rich Pageant
Lovely random pop-up mention of Nirvana’s MTV Unplugged album in today’s @thisamericanlife.org rerun. Also made me chuckle to hear Miriam Toews charmingly mispronounce Nirvana like Doug Llewelyn in the second “In Bloom” music video.
We will always be busy making misery (perennial theme song of Monday mornings and still a total jam)
Still one of the absolute best ‘90s-era punk albums of the bunch. Tim’s such a legend and Matt’s insanely sick bass grooves are next level. Always in the mood for this end-to-end gem.
Jamming out to possibly the greatest early-‘90s hip-hop comp of all time. De La, Tribe, Queen Latifah, Black Sheep, Jungle Brothers, Digital Underground, and so many more. Check that tracklist!
Magical morning tunes from the phenomenal @kristinhersh.bsky.social! This album’s stark instrumental beauty (just acoustic guitar and cello) crafts such an invitationally atmospheric space for the lyrical intimacy. Plus, the Stipe duet is just the perfect cherry on top of such an absolute classic.
On Fridays we listen to the Man in Black (especially when he’s covering my favorite Leonard Cohen tune and singing songs written specifically for him by Tom Waits and Glenn Danzig)
Can finally talk about this one! Midwest Calling: From First Avenue to the American Football House is available for preorder! Artists, label owners, booking agents and more discuss how Midwestern culture shaped their music and scenes. A dream book for me, the lineup is incredible. Check it out:

So bummed about this news!Dave’s era of 120 Minutes was so informative for my young musical tastes in that unwieldy alternative scene (especially pre-Nevermind). One of my fondest memories of Dave’s time is the Christmas ‘89 episode with Trent Reznor and Joey Ramone 🎄 youtu.be/5e4kZiyWPww

120 MINUTES was an absolute oasis in pre-internet pop culture. So many bands that you could ONLY find there (TV-wise) became ubiquitous online later (and relatively recently). A pioneer. consequence.net/2026/07/dave...

Monday morning kickoff with my boys! “Vacation in Athens is calling me” (though not at all during the summer heat, yeesh)
The single-most ‘90s moment within the uber-‘90s tableau of Nirvana playing MTV Unplugged has got to be Kurt drinking tea from a jazz paper cup.

Kicking Thursday off with the majestic Alicia Keys! Come for the amazing Aaliyah tribute, stay for the Gladys Knight and Isaac Hayes covers. Tony! Toni! Toné! and John Legend even drop in to play. What a killer album! (Plus Bob Dylan told me he was thinking about her and couldn’t keep from crying!)
