The rezoning passed this afternoon, and the project will move forward! The project is expected to need vacation permits as well for streets expected to be removed as part of the project.

A new plan for 50 new affordable homes on the Near Eastside of Indianapolis! ‘Sherman Lofts’ will include rehab of a historic structure and new recreation spaces for residents. The building will infill a largely vacant lot in an underutilized strip mall in the Blue Line TOD area!

The new plan for the redevelopment of Washington Square Mall, while unlikely, has some major issues worth mentioning. For one, mixed use and residential spaces should be loaded closer to the transit station, near Washington Street.

When I first moved to the Near Eastside of Indianapolis 6 years ago, there were only two non-chain coffee shops in the neighborhood. Today, there are 7, with two more slated to open soon.

For today’s #LayoverLibrary, I’m reading ‘Ramsey Milholland’ by Booth Tarkington, a classic coming of age story set in the years leading up to the first World War. Ramsey and Dora grow up together, but don’t grow close until their college years, when he makes a decision that draws her ire.

With the sidewalks done, excavation begins for the Harding Street BRT Platform. Further down the line, crews are installing the base for White River State Park (WB) and concrete pours are beginning at Park following install of wiring and plumbing.

For today’s #LayoverLibrary, I’m reading ‘The Indiana Way’, a seminal 1986 history of the state by renowned historian James Madison. Learned a ton I didn’t know in this one, including the incidents in 1947 and 1951 (which was equal parts amusing and fascinating).

The government shouldn’t follow developers in efforts to build in walkability; the effort must start with ensuring every resident has access within walking distance to public facilities like parks and libraries. This will be my next goal for the Near Eastside, further reducing reliance on vehicles.
