“My mother would brew tea for us—” she said before he could move farther, “—for my sister and me, as well as a friend who’d come to visit us from time to time. He used to love them.”

“Then perhaps you’d like to take some back with you, once you return.”

Nayra stood up. “He’s not there anymore.”

A long silence stretched between them. The Exarch had his back turned so she could not glean any emotion or expression that might cross his concealed face. But the pause had to mean something, right? He was Raha, wasn’t he? He might have donned a hooded robe and masked the tone of his voice, but he would have to be an idiot if he thought she would not recognize the soft timbre of his voice. The same timbre which had so often sung to her a tune of his far-off home. The timbre which still visited her in her dreams, bidding her farewell in front of the very same tower that now stood outside this hall.

Aerith jerked to a stop, halting the insidious thought where it was before it could pollute her mind any further.

The sun was particularly hot that day. Aerith had barely been in the upperplate for an hour and sweat was already dripping from her brow. She took refuge under the shades of a restaurant’s awning, fanning herself with the fabric of her dress, when two men in crisp navy suits passed by her.

“A tragic incident, that,” one of them said.

“I heard they lost quite a number of infantries.”

She followed them with her eyes, ears straining to hear more, but the restaurant’s bell jingled, a gust of fresh, indoor air cooling her overheating face, and the men disappeared behind the door.
