Water quality. The Hudson River was full of chemical and human waste, all the way north of Albany even. It’s not perfect notes but is so much cleaner.

I reiterate my argument that a society that values money above craft will have nothing worth owning or using. Government can help, but not solve, the problem by establishing a maximum wealth limit so that private capital is limited in its ability to ruin nice things.

Which goes back to "a lot of people have too much money and don't know what to do with it." Which goes back to: "We need to tax rich people more." It's like it's the solution to 99% of our problems!!
Kind of ironic that when they first came out, evangelical kids couldn’t read Harry Potter and now only evangelical kids read Harry Potter.
In elementary school, they made up a fake intraschool mail service so we could write letters to each other. I promptly write a letter to myself, mailed it off and had it “returned to sender” because I had written my “address” wrong in “to” on the envelope but wrote it right in “from.”

All this talk of "hypocrisy" being necessary to a society rests on the, frankly batty, psychologized view of ourselves we have - where our feelings are somehow more "the real us" than our actions. So if we feel like doing something bad but instead do something good, we are still bad!
My retirement goal is to form a parasocial relationship with a really cool machine and travel around the country using it to help people in mundane ways.

Casey Seiler@caseyseiler.bsky.social · 3mo agoAnthony Constantino's campaign hired a "support agent" to help with the candidate's communications; a simple Google search would have revealed that Alec Flores was (and is) facing a murder charge for allegedly slashing or stabbing a man to death in June 2023.
Reading the entire Bible and broadcasting it to the entire nation while actively taking food, healthcare, clean water, clean air, shelter, due process, and basic human dignity away from people is the exact kind of religious hypocrisy Jesus raged against.

We have reached the part of Christmas where I eat leftovers in the order of how little food there is in the container, so I can have the joy of cleaning out as many containers at one meal as possible. I finished five different containers at lunch.
So chuffed that my native county in NY, an ancestrally Republican place, gave 15 out of its 25 seats on the county legislature to Democrats last night, re-elected its Democratic comptroller and elected a Democratic county judge both by 40k to 32k votes.

If you want more NY thoughts, the collision in the 1800s of Dutch tolerance and New England passion for social righteousness fueled both the ideas of the abolitionist movement and created the manpower necessary to carry them out in the many immigrants who fought for the Union in the Civil War.
I live in what was 300 years ago the Dutch heartland of North America. I have a vanishingly small percentage of Dutch ancestry, so don't really count it as my history. It is fascinating to me that the Dutch laid the foundations of NY and within 200 years, had basically drifted into history.
