Retired NWS meteorologist and basement drummer (not retired). I could very well be watching the Cyclones, Bears, or Cubs as well. Big dogs are best.

Info-graphic of what I compute for max dew points over Iowa today along with period of record stats. NB: AI did the graphic design, but the data is all my handywork. Feel free to reuse as you wish.

Iowa ASOS max dew points for 26 July 2026 and records.

I'm happy to announce the launch of malpais.app, a free NEXRAD/TDWR radar viewer that lives in your browser. malpais downloads Level 2 or Level 3 data from NOAA's Open Data Dissemination archives and renders it in WebGL on your desktop or mobile device. For free.

A band of snow spanning multiple Midwest states was visible last night under the waxing gibbous moon. Chunks of lake ice can also bee seen floating on the waters of Lake Michigan and Green Bay.

1/2SM in moderate to heavy snow at Fort Dodge. RAP sounding gives a clue. Dendritic Growth Zone certainly isn't deep, but well super-saturated with respect to ice and strong lift seems to compensate with productive crystal type (dendrites). #iawx

8pm CST RAP sounding at RAP showing super-saturated dentritic growth zone with respect to ice and strong vertical motion in that same layer.

The dendrite machine is fully operational in Des Moines. RAP sounding shows it well supersaturated wrt ice in and near the DGZ. This boosts snow/liquid ratios well into the 30s as noted in the Cobb Bufkit data. #iawx
