Looking at the massive anti-competitive consolidation in the production, processing, distribution, and sale of food, and assuming that the federal government will continue to do nothing about it, you treat it as a market failure like Hayek would. Many cities already did this with electricity.

Politics aside, do people believe city-run grocery stores with deeply discounted prices are a good POLICY idea? What are they intended to accomplish, in your view? What problem do they solve? Would you implement them if not running for election? I'm sincerely curious in people's answers here.

God I wish I could’ve taken him out for lunch or a beer. He might’ve been a prick, but he was right. And consider how long his career was. He encountered every species of Hollywood and publishing fuckery.

Whether you agree with his (self-admittedly) cantankerous opinions, Harlan Ellison was truly a force to be reckoned with. I think about this interview often — especially when young writers ask me how to make a living as one.

fun fact about the crushing weight of human history: the city of Ugarit was abandoned ~3000 years ago. previously to this, it was continually inhabited for >7000 years. and the people who settled it would have ALSO understood themselves as the inheritors to a history that is now totally lost to us

This is why socialists have to use a more expansive definition of “working class.” Everyone without independent wealth, who must sell their labor to survive, is one layoff, breakup, serious illness, burglary, house fire, rent hike, arrest, etc. from losing everything. That’s class unity.

so like lemme weigh in on this as someone who is more financially comfortable than many in my generational cohort: everything I have gained seems precarious and temporary because I know the people with real money will take it all from me the second they get an opportunity and no one will protect me.

Fear not. The CEOs of all the airlines will go to Trump (offering tributes/benevolences/bribes, bending over to present their bare asses) and gently explain that this stupid fuck’s plan will halt ALL int’l flights throughout the US, cause global chaos, and bankrupt their companies.

Aaron Reichlin-Melnick@reichlinmelnick.bsky.social · 4mo ago

This plan is actively *insane.* Airlines cannot divert large numbers of international flights from one city to another; they'd just have to cancel flights en masse, causing enormous economic damage that splashed waaaaay beyond a few big cities that were the target.

Neuroscientists say that people who enjoy extreme wealth and influence for many years are so incapable of grasping the quotidian experiences of normal people (empathy is too abstract) that they functionally have brain damage. That’s why Cuban thinks his maid buys his artisanal cheeses at a bodega.

This will make some folks mad :). The best way for these grocery stores to work is if they use AI to get an edge over private grocery stores. AI is the one way for the state government to out perform private enterprises.
