i finally watched Niu Lai with a friend yesterday lol. i'm impressed and inspired by all the dedication and love that mother-son team poured into the project, even though the animation and plot are really odd at times 😂😅

She saved lives. Thats her legacy - in so many charities and purposes, Dolly Parton saved lives. She never hoarded anything. She came from poverty, and knew to care for community. She is fundamentally - and fortunately for all of us - the opposite of what we see today. She was the best of us.

i got an email as a poet-translator where i'm invited to submit to the "2026 Stories Global Chinese Fiction Awards," which "explicitly allow reasonable AI or third-party assistance for translation". it's seriously messed up. so here's my PSA to please not submit to contests that allow AI

I am going to do a new thread because I have now read the filings from the two law firms who are appealing and I have read the underlying order of the district judge that they are appealing.

Yeah I am self employed as an English tutor, editor, sensitivity reader and translator (for more commercial work) to sustain myself and then I spend my free time on creative writing and literary translations. Writing is like a passion project that's also an extremely low paying job

The only conversation worth having is how Black people are overpoliced & over-punished & held to different standards in all aspects of life. That there is an outrage when Black people transgress that isn’t there when their non-Black counterparts do.
This is 100% true. They'll gleefully destroy any institutional space that makes room for Black people, and then turn around and say it's for "intellectual diversity" or similar bullshit. And meanwhile, most of these "anti-wokers" are mediocre--at best!--occupants of those same spaces

They believe every Black person in such a position is an Uppity Negro who doesn’t belong there. The other option— destroy the entire institution.

Yuuuup. Understanding how LLMs and generative "AI" work is not some sort of secret knowledge, nor at its heart an unenduringly complex topic, and it turns out writers, who generally how to do research, are in a good position to get a bead on them.

terrible flashbacks about the time i was using British Museum compensation money (for stealing my work) to fund a project that was supposed to support literary translators, but i nearly got cut out from my own project... which left me bedridden from cptsd for weeks
