Psychology researchers: Got questions about what kinds of submissions we’re looking for at Psych Science (the journal)? (Short answer: empirical research in any area of psychology!) If you’re at #APS26BCN, stop by the APS booth in the exhibit hall between 4-5pm today to chat with me!

Wimsatt: Perhaps, just perhaps, the best explanation of a phenomenon at a given level is to be found at the same level. Kendler: Noone would seek to explain hypertension at the level of quarks. A few of my favourite papers on this topic of absurd biological reductionism: 🧵

This...the fetishizing of unreplicable neuroscience in order to legitimize our work is self-defeating. We don't need to know that depression is in the brain (as opposed to what???) to know it is problematic. How much money have we wasted proving something like depression is "real"?

New paper showing insufficient evidence for neuroimaging features to define reproducible, biologically valid, & clinically meaningful schizophrenia subtypes. The subtypes identified to date likely reflect continuous variation within the disorder rather than discrete, biologically distinct entities.

A review of 18 studies found no consistently reproducible subtypes of schizophrenia, suggesting that differences in brain structure across patients may reflect a spectrum rather than discrete biological categories.

I've been thinking a lot about the foundations of cultural evolutionary theory. While there's been a lot of work on transmission mechanisms, there has been far less work on cultural *selection*. Here's a new working paper presenting a taxonomy of cultural selection processes. osf.io/preprints/so...

3 new studies on using psychedelics as treatments for mental disorders just came out; 2 in JAMA Psychiatry, 1 in Lancet Psychiatry. I reviewed one of these submissions. Here are the core results. 🧵

They want to make it so publicly-funded academic knowledge production ends — the core unique role of universities — accidentally or on purpose, they want it to stop... > It’s going to start getting really, really hard to get faculty to do stuff other than show up in their classroom.

"Imposing minimum teaching requirements...has been touted as a way to cut costs and 'better focus university resources in the classroom,' .... The notion is also gaining steam in conservative circles as a means of ensuring faculty productivity and curbing 'intellectually unserious' research."

If you truly believe that social media platforms are harmful places, the idea that the government now makes a list of vulnerable people and bans them from these platforms, e.g. based on age, is not a sensible or good faith solution. Regulate the platforms instead, for everybody.

If our theories have to do with people's daily experience then we really need to know how well we're measuring daily experience. So we need more of what Kevin's team is doing here! Just because your item has the right words in it doesn't mean you know what it measures, or how well.

I kept reading EMA studies claiming to test etiological theories of AUD, but I realized they never actually measured how people experience AUD in their daily lives. So we set out to see what we could learn with existing data. 1/19 journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...
