happy birthday xingqiu 💙 in honor of xingqiu going through the asian kid canon event of sublimating your hopes and dreams to the family business, here's part of my latest modern au wip, featuring xq and ht in business school

MGMT 200: Intro to Law (November 2014) “Listen,” Xingqiu says darkly, curling his hands around his still-steaming paper cup of coffee. “I followed you into this program. You’d better not desert me for law school just because you’re in love with our Intro to Law TA. We have to get our MBAs together. You promised.” “Aiya, Qiuqiu, so quick to read into things! What if I’m simply interested in this class for the sake of understanding the law better?” Xingqiu stares at Hu Tao, deeply unimpressed. “Wow, that’s exactly the way Chongyun looks at me!” Hu Tao chirps. “Now that you’re roommates, he must really be rubbing off on you, huh?”She recognizes the innuendo a moment too late. Still, if there’s one thing Hu Tao can always be counted on to do, it’s to commit to a bit. She throws an exaggerated wink in to seal the deal; it works like a charm, and Xingqiu flushes bright red. In her great magnanimity, Hu Tao opts not to say something along the lines of I can’t believe neither of you have confessed that you’re in love with each other when you literally live together. Instead, she kicks at Xingqiu’s shins under the table. “A-ny-way, isn’t it a bit too early to be worrying about your MBA? Come on, little Qiuqiu, this is the first quarter of your freshman year! Live a little!” “Don’t call me that, you’re literally one year older than me,” Xingqiu grouses. Hu Tao rests her chin in her hands, bestowing her sunniest smile upon Xingqiu, and singsongs, “But while we’re on campus, I’m your respectable senior!”“Since when are you respectable—” “And speaking as your very-much-respected senior, you’re supposed to listen to my advice! Where is Chongyun, anyway? Don’t tell me he didn’t want to hang out with me. I’ll be heartbroken.” “He went home to visit his mothers this weekend. He said he wouldn’t be able to focus on his assignments with you chattering, anyway.” ”It’s not my fault poor Yunyun is so easily distracted.” Xingqiu ignores the slight to his not-boyfriend’s honor, wrenching the conversation inelegantly back to the original topic. “Really, though. Maybe you’re not going to abandon me for law school—” “Perish the thought!”

Xingqiu: Why not pair Chongyun and me together instead? We could be the “Two Heroes of Xingyun”, in answer to the “Two Sages of Lianshan”. What do you think?
