The Undertones & Jools at Cyprus Avenue

The Undertones played Cyprus Avenue in Cork last night, and Jools opened for them. Jools were loud and physical and full of emotion and energy. The Undertones brought the house down with Teenage Kicks, My Perfect Cousin, and let’s not forget Mars Bars!

Coils of Fire

At the end of the Dragon of Shandon parade we were treated to performances by some of the groups in the parade. This fire dance was spectacular with flames swirling around and sparks flying through the air. The ground was wet thankfully. 🙂

The Blue Wave at Garrettstown

Waves crashed against the sea wall at Garrettstown Beach in Co Cork in this February 2011 photo. A cold day but looking forward to better days ahead.

Hank & Ray every Monday in Charlie’s Bar

Hank Wedel & Ray Barron entertained in Charlie’s Bar in Cork last night with some great tunes and banter. Their friend, Evan, joined in to perform one song. It was a lovely way to pass two hours on a Monday evening.

The Buzzing Bees of Shandon

The Dragon of Shandon had to compete with the happiest buzzing bees I’ve ever seen on Saturday night. All smiles and laughter, and they were delighted to be taking part in the parade!

The People of the Dragon of Shandon

Here’s a selection of photos from the Dragon of Shandon by Cork Art Link last night. It’s a wonderful parade through Cork City on Halloween night. So much creativity and energy goes into this event every year and last night’s event was oh so good. There are more photos to come. I walked the route […]

Back to the Wall

The stone wall of Sant Pere in Figueres goes up a long way, and the only opening in it is a narrow slit window near the top. Salvador Dalí was baptised in this church in 1904. Hopefully she’s looking at examples of his work on her phone.

Paws Up on the Lee Fields

Three teenagers were sitting on a bench in the Lee Fields when a terrier ran up to them looking for attention. And attention was given!

Blue and Yellow by City Hall

On Culture Night in Cork, a group of Ukrainian teenagers and children danced in a wide circle on the paving beside City Hall, with a crowd standing around the edge to watch. It was 2022, less than a year into the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russia.

Dublin, After the Rain

November 2022 and it was raining in Dublin, but under the arches of the GPO people had a break from the deluge.

Stamps, Coins and Old Labels

Most of the Mercado Central in Valencia sells food. This stall sold stamps pinned to a board, trays of enamel pins, old banknotes and coins under glass, and a row of faded rum, vermouth and brandy labels along the front. Such a collection of some unusual items and all sorts of things.

Inspecting the Goods

At the Friday market in Bantry the second-hand traders were out in the car park, past the food stalls, with their stock laid out on the tarmac. So much stuff to look at and some bargains to be found if you looked hard enough.

One Boot Down

A woman on a pale bike stopped in the square outside the Mercat Central in Valencia, looking back at something behind me.

Market Day Companion

A woman and her dog. She was listening to her phone, while her dog sat on her lap.

The Look

The man in the checked shirt turned round and looked straight at the camera as I walked past. It was a hip shot. I don’t think he knew he was the subject of my photo.

The Long White Museum

The Museu de les Ciències in Valencia is a spectacular sight. Santiago Calatrava’s building goes on for a long way, a row of white concrete ribs and arches with a wide flight of steps at one end.

Cash Point Companion

Two people were taking out cash but the doggy was keeping an eye on the crowds walking past, and probably looking for other dogs as they were a common sight on the streets of Valencia.

The Puddle Mirror

A puddle covered most of the floor of the car park at the Kingsley Hotel and luckily no cars drove through it while I had my camera down low by the water’s edge. I love how this came out.

Last Light on Shandon

I stopped at the corner of Cattle Market Avenue as the evening sun dropped behind the rooftops. The street was already in shade. What light was left fell on Shandon’s tower, clock and gold salmon included, and on a Lidl Connect billboard on the wall beside me. A lovely evening to be out in Cork […]

The Roar and the Indifference

Today started early with a drive to Killarney before sunrise. I got there a few minutes after 7:30am and in the cold donned wellies and wrapped up well. Soon the world started to brighten and sooner still I regretted wearing wellies instead of my comfortable runners. The deer were elusive most of the day but […]

Flamenco by Appointment

On a team meetup in Madrid in 2017, a group of us went to see flamenco dancing at Cardamomo. The dancer spun fast enough to blur, with two guitarists, a singer and two men clapping behind. I’m not sure what I expected, but it didn’t move me. The reviews are glowing, though. Every seat I […]

No Parking, Plenty of Moorings

Walk down the road from Man Friday in Kinsale, and you’ll come to a fork in the road with lots of boats on the water beyond.

Last Light at the End of the Peninsula

It was turning out to be a disappointing sunset as there was so much cloud, and it was getting dark quickly, not great when you’re balancing on the hill going down to Dunquin Pier. Luckily, there was a break in the clouds and I spotted some of the golden light of the sunset peek through. […]

Hagia Sophia from the Fountain

I walked through Sultanahmet Park on a bright October afternoon while clouds moved quickly over the Hagia Sophia. The fountain in the middle of the park was a pleasure to watch and lots of people were enjoying it, taking time to sit and take in the sound of water falling.

The Triton Fountain in Valletta, Malta. It’s an impressive artwork, but all the better when it’s lit up at night!

Upside Down on Kennedy Quay

I took this in January 2018 on Kennedy Quay, after rain had left wide puddles across the broken tarmac. The same photo now would only show blue sky and clouds as the R&H Hall building has since been demolished.

Cobh on St Patrick’s Night

I watched the St Patrick’s Day fireworks in Cobh this year from across the water. This must have been at the start of the event as the boat firing the fireworks drifted quite far down the harbour by the time it finished.

Before the Walls Went Up

I took this from across the river in August 2019, looking at Holy Trinity Church on Father Mathew Quay. The floodlights were on, and the water was still enough to reflect the whole spire. The river walls along this stretch have been built up since then as part of the flood works. In 2019 the […]
