If chains are a fundamental organizational principle of cortex, how have we never noticed them before? The answer is that we are used to looking at data averaged across large groups, and group averaging hides them!

Individuals’ catenation maps were very similar. They all had dense catenation in prefrontal cortex, and moderate catenation in temporal, parietal, and insular cortex. Catenation was lowest in primary cortex and in parietal regions.
