🎉 Exciting news, our newest paper is officially out in #ApplEnvironMicrobiol #AEM🔬! We investigated how an Acinetobacter gene found in goose feces 💩🦆 can contribute to colistin #AntibioticResistance in E. coli. #microsky croftsmicrolab.org 👇 Read the paper: journals.asm.org/doi/10.1128/...
A functionally selected Acinetobacter sp. phosphoethanolamine transferase gene from the goose fecal microbiome confers colistin resistance in E. coli | Applied and Environmental Microbiology
Colistin is an important antibiotic of last resort, and increasing resistance to this drug via mobile phosphoethanolamine transferase genes, such as mcr-1, threatens its clinical utility. Given the discovery of mcr-1 in pigs, the ability of animals to act as vectors in the spread of colistin resistance is alarming. We show here that functionally selected Acinetobacter phosphoethanolamine transferase genes from the goose microbiome have the ability to confer clinical levels of colistin resistance when transferred into E. coli. While the genes are annotated as eptA homologs, closer study of these genes suggests that they may be mobilized within the Acinetobacter genus, suggesting that they may be mcr genes of concern instead.

Now out in @natcomms.nature.com w/ @evfedorenko.bsky.social: across many people (>1k) and tasks (>300), the the brain's language network reliably shows up in the functional connectome (correlated activity in fMRI). 1/
A special highlight of our work on precision fMRI of the prefrontal cortex
Out of the 30 million MRIs performed in the United States every year, data shows about 22% of those are on the brain. Now, researchers at the University of Illinois are mapping out ways to see the results at a more detailed level.

(1/5) Our paper is out now in Neuron! bsky.app/profile/cp-n... The LPFC has fine-scale organization that gets missed in group-averaged data because of inter-individual variability. It is visible in individuals in both resting-state and task data.

Evidence for repeating chains of function in cortex, especially PFC! ⛓️⛓️🧠
I always assumed that brain function had to line up with cytoarchitectonics. It turns out I was wrong. Human cortex, especially PFC, is tiled by chains of functional patches that subdivide and interlink architectonic areas into parallel processing streams. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...
