Big day for Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, where local partners are hoping for donations in honor of 9/25. (Allow me to introduce my dad, Not That Tom Friedman, co-founder of the Imagination Library of Greater Houston)

This week I found out my dad wasn’t just volunteering with the Houston branch of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library— he’s the President & co-founder. Really proud, so please enjoy this clip (& support...

I otherwise have no opinions about This is Us, but there’s a shot in the pilot where a cop lights a cigarette in a hospital and that’s where we really see that the scene is taking place in the 70’s. That’s art right there. What a good reveal.

Made a joke about Happy Days yesterday. My partner didn’t know what it was, so I explained it as That 70’s Show for the 80’s. Got me thinking how we’re possibly a few years out of a similar show that has to either engage with or pointedly ignore post 9/11 jingoism and paranoia.

When Whithers tells you that he can perform resurrections for 200gp, your character can say, “That’s outrageous!” I have to assume they mean that it’s expensive. I wish it let you express that 200g to come back from the dead is actually very cheap.

Several years ago, when I was voicing anxiety about my quality as a parent, one of my friends said, “I think you’re a perfect parent for like an 8-10 year old.” Now that I have a 5 year old, that feels even more true.

Brief rant about Zombies, a series of musicals that I haven’t seen but have heard the music from: Look, I get that reprising “Someday” works and is a tradition at this point, but trying it with “We’re Gunna Be Fine” is… like, a big swing to begin with, but WITHOUT THE HORNS? Come on. What the hell.

Tim Curry and Dolly Parton have taught us not only that you should be bigger, weirder, gayer, and freakier, but also that those qualities are what people will love about you. The things that make you strange and amazing are the things that will resonate with other strange and amazing people

Imagination Library is her major ongoing charitable org, but I remember hearing a story about all the smaller efforts she spun up in response to disasters, used to directly give to the effected, and then shut down by disbursing everything that was left to locals. Model direct aid at scale.

Dolly Parton's family asked that, in lieu of flowers, fans make a donation to the singer's Imagination Library. Here's what the charity does ⬇️ www.rollingstone.com/music/music-...

One of the problems inherent to adversarial structures of governance is the way that all you aren’t allowed to just like things because sentiment is a weakness that political opponents can exploit, so you end up insisting that, for instance, you only like boats because you’ve made them useful.

Dork? Hardly. The navy was also a white elephant offering until Dunes secured a partnership that made it useful. Cecil is shrewd as hell just... at a serious political disadvantage.

Broken Clocks aren’t necessarily right twice a day if they’re still running, and Catholicism is a clock made of slipped gears, where the second hand occasionally gets stuck and the minute hand will occasionally drop from 3 to 5. Which is why I think it’s extra funny when they’re just bang on right.

This is the funniest shit. Florida allows religious exemptions for vaccines. Catholic schools in Florida: we require vaccines. Florida's attorney general, who is Catholic, is threatening to pull vouchers if they don't allow for religious exemptions The Bishops: separation of church & state

Tbh, most people drawn to bard would be happier with the Sorcerer or Monk tool kit reimagined as performance. Or be well served by the straightforwardness of Fighter, come down to it. They would make more thorough use of the game without having to compromise their artistic vision.

Playing Baldur’s Gate 3 in earnest for the first time. Got me thinking about things like, “Bard is a trap for theater kids and would be better cut,” “Warlock is a better alt progression track than full class to force engagement with your patron,” and “Wildshape should not be core to Druid,” again.

Skill issue, if we take the inaccuracy as a contradiction in historical context it creates a fruitful question to be explored through play rather than a problem in need of solving. In bed.
