On the one hand, I updated our parquet schema checks to be able to run on even the 5-billion row EQR transactions table. On the other hand, this just revealed that none of the primary keys FERC identifies in their data dictionary are actually unique.

If you look at the all-in cost of driving and not just energy costs (as represented here by the IRS reimbursement rate per mile, inflation adjusted) it's predictably exorbitant. And this is still just a portion of the the private cost. A society that imposes car dependency impoverishes itself.

A plot showing the all-in cost of driving per mile, adjusted for inflation, between 1994 and 2026, as represented by the IRS mileage reimbursement rate. It has been remarkably stable over more than 30 years with no obvious trend. The values range between roughly $0.65/mile and $0.89/mile in 2026 dollars.

Inflation-adjusted energy cost of driving in America since 1993: Petrol swings wildly with oil markets and geopolitics. Home-charged EVs remain much cheaper and very stable. Predictability matters for household budgets. Source: buff.ly/x9BPuVL

One thing about China quietly reducing its oil imports to stave off global economic collapse is that it kind of *enables* Trump's insanity. Giving him every available inch of rope to hang himself (and the US) with. Depleting the SPR & armory. Making his idiocy obvious to the world...

Over the past decade, Beijing has experienced one of the most remarkable cycling renaissances in the world, powered by an innovation that has quietly transformed everyday mobility: dockless bike-sharing. Millions of residents suddenly rediscovered the joy of the bicycle, without needing to own one.🧵

Man the range of quality of LLM derived open source pull requests is just wild. From nonsense garbage to preternaturally responsive and good. Is there a human driving back there somewhere? I'm not sure. Is publishing our docs as markdown for LLMs to read helping? Also unclear.

If there are any wealthy benefactors interested, I'm happy to run your research institute and help direct and oversee funded research in dismantling car culture. hmu! 😄

The hilarious meta aspect of this story about used EV prices in the US rising is how long they take to reach the obvious (but repugnant to The Discourse) conclusion, that people really like the EVs that US carmakers don’t want to sell them www.cnbc.com/2026/07/31/u...

EV prices aren't following the 'law of used cars,' analyst says — what it means for buyers and sellers

The prices for used electric vehicles have risen this year, which is unusual, experts said. Affordability and high gas prices help explain why, they said.

One way you could create affordable grocery stores in NYC is to make sure they aren't paying exorbitant land-rents with a public land grant or land trust. Then make them cooperatives owned by and operated for the benefit of their members, not for profit. 🔰

Is it not weird that the Strait of Hormuz is closed, both ends of Saudi Arabia's east-west pipeline are getting bombed, (including the world's largest oil processing facility) the Houthis are threatening to shut down the Red Sea, and markets seem to be like *shrug* What am I missing?
