Every time I go back home to New York, at least one person laments how uNsAfE tHe SuBwAy has become. This has never been true in my lifetime and yet it is often repeated. There is clearly a story here about WHY major outlets demonize public transit but I've never read any reporting about it.

Someone broke into my car in broad daylight to steal my friend's backpack in a metered parking lot run by the city with cameras in it and when I called the police they told me to come to a station to give a statement even though the police had already sent a car for a different theft by the same guy

This is fucking insane. Shrugging off a 1% fatality rate is not just profoundly stupid, it is also unspeakably cruel. If everyone got the virus in the US, that would be more than 30 million deaths. And that's not even considering what the mortality WOULD be if everyone was sick at the same time.

This train of thought is often obscured in the discourse around the founding of Israel; but it cannot be overstated how the problem the British were solving was the presence of Jewish Displaced Persons in Europe at the end of WW2—not the safety of those persons.

There's nothing to "join" in the Democratic Party. It's a brand with products I spend my vote on once a year at the democracy store. Most people's experience of it is an endless stream of texts that read like scams, their reward for donating or signing a petition. No wonder DSA is growing
