Most states have collections of their historical newspapers digitized online and those free sites have been so much more helpful to my book project than the big expensive databases I fortunately can also access. Local news and public access for the win. Then, now, always.

Make it your personal mission not to become ignorant and compliant. Become worse at your job. Read books. Do projects that take days. Take walks in the woods with friends. Love a houseplant. Choose not to use AI. Stop buying time-saving things and hoarding wealth and objects. Start hoarding time.

John Wiswell@wiswell.bsky.social · 4mo agoYou would get so many more amazing books if you had Universal Basic Income. Not even the most dream-scenario AI could compete with the creativity of a world of authors no longer afraid of affording rent.
Why do dead men make so much? What if we donated all proceeds of dead authors' works, beyond a living stipend for their immediate families, to a collective fund to support new writers? Writers are becoming other things that actually make them money. We are losing literature altogether.
