I work at a public library. People who want to use AI seem to have no trouble doing so. People who don't want to use AI have a harder time. As the one responsible for all tech in a state library/archive that's about the size & with the same remit as some national libraries, let me amplify: libraries need more funding. Tell your politicians & administrators. We are getting crushed by the fact that "digital" is more expensive than books.

Good news, but the fact that this is only happening now, nearly three years after the cyber attack shows 1) what a huge job BL staff have had rebuilding services, 2) that the BL is underfunded, and 3) the impact this has had on academic research, especially in the humanities.

Back in May, a fed'l judge issued an extensive decision in SDNY declaring the DOGE-related mass-cancellation of National Endowment for the Humanities grants to have been illegal and unconstitutional. On Monday, the final day to appeal, DOJ filed its notice of appeal to the Second Circuit.

Fun new acquisition here at the Boston Public Library. This is a 1476 edition of Eusebius of Caesarea's church history, printed in Rome. We bought this book for basically one reason only -- a fantastic printing error that left an impression on one page from a single piece of "fallen type."

The body of the type has been drilled through, which is evidenced by the white circle in the middle. The purpose of drilling through type is still not entirely understood.
