I yearn for a return to the good old days when I can awaken in the morning, and my very first thought of the day DOESN'T have to be, "Okay, what the fuck did he do now?"

On June 6 1944, my father spent the day before his 20th birthday in the second wave at Omaha Beach. He would never, ever talk about it. It wasn't until I saw the first half hour of Saving Private Ryan that I understood his silence.

Up until the present time, it had been generally conceded by most historians that James Buchanan was the worst president ever in America. Well Mr.B., Congratulations. You're out of the basement!

Tomorrow, I begin my 76th trip around the sun. I recall the words of one of my childhood heroes, Mickey Mantle, who said, "If I knew that I was going to live this long, I would have taken better care of myself."
