This is a distant cousin to my 50% serious question about whether thumb placement matters on throwing a fastball. Like, some dudes curl their thumbs and others don't. I could never throw with a curled thumb, and it can drive me bonkers trying to figure out if it matters.

Max Scherzer in a Blue Jays uniform, arm cocked as he delivers a pitch. His thumb is curled on the underside of the ball, with the inner side of the thumb touching the ball while the pointer and middle fingers are on top in a four-seam grip.Yoshinobu Yamamoto in a Dodgers uniform, arm cocked at about the same spot in the delivery as Scherzer's. His thumb is not curled under the ball, and instead the pad of the thumb is touching the underside of the ball with the pointer and middle fingers on top in a four-seam grip.

my dumbest baseball opinion that I don't really believe but still maybe kind of believe: i just don't believe where you grip a fastball has that much impact on how it moves. they must be lying to us, all seams are the same, they're doing something else to it

Could go on about how people outside the Bay Area largely don't understand the geography and therefore largely don't understand that while San Francisco could do a lot more on housing, there are a whole bunch of places like Palo Alto that could also do a lot more and actively work against building.

want to expand upon the latter part: most teams do extremely uninteresting shit with their playing time when they are bad, most often employing role 4/45 filler veterans with no upside. The 2026 Nats handed their’s to post hype sleeper busted prospects, hit on several, and traded them for real value
