New preprint with @carlbergstrom.com, Kevin Gross, and @mjcrockett.bsky.social. See Carl's thread. Surprise! Even if LLMs work perfectly, they'll make scientists refine their work less deeply, because they raise the opportunity cost of time, pushing researchers to do more, less well.

A figure describing the results.

1. We—@eduede.bsky.social, @mjcrockett.bsky.social, Kevin Gross, and I—have a new preprint on the arXiv today, based on ideas that emerged during an @sfiscience.bsky.social workshop in November 2024: The unintended consequences of large language models as a labor-augmenting technology in science.

Looking to work with a postdoc. Prior experience with fMRI and computational modeling required, interest in psychiatry desired. Fellowship provides three years salary plus independent travel/equipment funds. Send CV and 2-3 manuscripts (preprints OK).

New lab preprint! Dr. (x2) @biancaleonard.bsky.social leads a multidisciplinary team investigating the opposing effects of early-life unpredictability and anhedonia on foraging under threat of predation. Her results suggest that anhedonia may sometimes be an adaptive response to experience. 🧵 below!

Records show UC sharing data with US Customs and Border Protection

Public records turned up by The Ellis Collective, a student-led research group, have revealed that the UC system shared data collected by automated license plate readers at multiple campuses with

This is the way. We do not need to accept the right’s bad-faith and blatantly dishonest caricature of higher education. Colleges and universities regularly platform views across the political spectrum, perhaps more than any other American institution.

“Viewpoint diversity” is a trap For @table.media, I wrote about the Yale report on “Trust in Higher Education” – and why we will not be able to defend academic freedom by accepting the terms set by a rightwing campaign intended to impose reactionary rule. Some thoughts, since it is in German:
