So much of America’s “high standard of living” is just paying more for the same things. Healthcare costs twice as much for worse outcomes. Housing prices are mostly a zoning tax. And we’ve designed cities where you need a $50k car to buy groceries. Expensive isn’t the same as better.

Yelling into the void from the city that Jenny Lind dubbed "the most beautiful village in the world" and "the paradise of America". Georgist. #carsruincities
On Nov 2, 2022, 6 days before the mid-term election, the fed voted to raise the interest rate by 0.75% to 3.75–4.00%. Ukraine/Russia war energy shock added to inflation already driven by supply snags and a tight labor market. On Nov 8, 2022, Republicans picked up 9 seats in the House.
When a pedestrian gets hit, people blame the driver. When a person on a bike gets hit, they blame the person on a bike. Is it because most people wouldn’t feel confident riding in traffic themselves, so they assume anyone who does must be reckless?
Say only you can solve inflation. Start a war. Make inflation much worse.
MA desperately needs more housing, and a lot of our local zoning is built to stop it. But the fix isn't scrapping rules altogether. It's clear, by-right zoning that plans for density near transit, infrastructure, and affordability. Pro-growth and pro-planning aren't opposites.
I just said “remember 2004?” and realized that’s like someone in 2004 saying “remember 1982?” I wasn’t born in 1982. I am now the old guy. 🤯
Culturally, we’ve decided strictly enforcing traffic laws isn’t worth it. People will always make mistakes, sure, but a lot of what happens on the road is a choice to break the law. When we actually enforce, we see results.
Ossoff ending pretty much every debate answer with a direct question to Collins is brilliant.
High rates have been around long enough that I expected more fallout by now.
Fun fact: the people stuck in traffic downtown mostly don't live downtown. Congestion is a commuting problem, not a 'too many residents' problem.
They should have toothpaste squeezing championships where you race to see who is fastest to get 99% of the weight out of the I’ve.
You know what really bends my pins? Websites that break auto-fill for password managers. Why do you hate your users? Things like multi-step login processes, bad field names, javascript screwing with entering credentials… if your website or program interferes with autofill you’re a terrible developer
Sad time where Rs have to choose between which is worse: a Russia bully or high diesel prices
For four months, I subletted a place a block and a half from the Page. I should have gone there more often. I think Tufte would approve of this online beer menu.
Vehicular cycling sucks. Nobody wants to ride a bike in the middle of a lane with cars behind them. But on most Massachusetts roads, it’s the safest choice we have. Here’s why.
This @nyc.streetsblog.org story highlights horrifically and graphically many, many of the things wrong with the culture around traffic all over the world: nyc.streetsblog.org/2026/10/09/o... It is utterly disgusting that so many commenters seem to be blaming the child victims.
Cycle Of Rage: One Crash Shows How Reckless Car Drivers Ruin Kids' Childhoods - Streetsblog New York City
We want our kids off their phones and reading books in the library. Too bad drivers don't give a shit. A rant from Streetsblog Editor Gersh Kuntzman.

Life goes on and then you die. ~85 rings. Ash. Killed by the emerald ash borer
One of the things I miss about living in NYC is that I don’t have a local market, I have to go to a supermarket.
It's so funny when drivers view traffic calming measures as a fundamental attack on their right to use a car. You can still drive! You're just being forced to drive more slowly and safely.
The people who built modern industry lived in the details. The people running it now think it was all luck, which explains a lot about how they run it.
The suburban dream was dependent on (impossible) never-ending growth
New Jersey’s suburban discount is disappearing as family expenses rise faster than in Manhattan.
The Democratic Party message should be simple and repeated constantly: this isn't a 4-year problem. It's a 10-year cleanup.
It's maddening when people want e-bikes banned from shared trails but accept the dangers of cars as a necessary part of life.
Isaias was a hurricane with $5B damage in 2020. Why is it getting used again already?
