Why on earth not just put the Emergency briefing film on bbc i player now? All this messing about trying to use it as a campaign tool (petitions to get the Govt to show it on all 4 channels, like some PSB from the 40s) is just game playing. If you want to reach 'ordinary' people, go where they are.

Fabulous thread on workhouses as early providers of healthcare. Fascinated by how they were used by some women as maternity hospitals. But the birth certificate would always show the full address (not 'the workhouse') to avoid stigma.

So what was the answer? Burnham seems to have waded into the subject via early release (God knows why - his hero/saviour complex?) and now we have a totally inexperienced Minister having to deal with the fallout of that. We'd made a good start in fixing the nightmare Tory prison legacy. A shame.

Burnham is known for telling whatever truth suits him at the time. Why shouldn't Darren Jones call that out from Day one? I don't care what colour the Govt is - I want them to be honest, and not just make stuff up because it's 'good comms'.

So it's ok for Burnham (and other ego driven chancers) can scheme, plot and connive to oust a Labour leader and Prime Minister. But then everyone else has to suck it up, and pretend he's the best thing since sliced bread? Well fuck that. Because fair's fair. Even if he plays dirty.
Ah, but if a comprehensive plan is produced, without an accompanying saccharine press statement from the eyelash fluttering Leader, does it really exist?

Wish he'd stayed at H&SC. I saw him answering questions in the Commons a few weeks ago and he was really good - completely on top of his brief and understood instinctively how to combat the nonsense from the opposition. Will he be replaced by a Burnham 'debt' rather than someone with some skills..

He didn’t end it. I’m not knocking the ambition - it was a huge, huge issue at the time, but unfortunately it still is. Numbers in GM are higher than they were in 2016, when he ran for mayor, and getting on for where they were when he was elected

This is very disappointing. Such an important and undervalued brief which was for years held by a succession of uninterested itinerants. A prisons minister who genuinely cared and who was starting to see results.

Wow. So - depending on how many lose their deposits - the council will receive a maximum of 34x£300 (£10,200). But each of the 34 candidates is entitled to claim costs for sending one letter to every elector. So costs = 34x £68.250) = £2,320,500. £2.3 MILLION. That's not democracy - that's bonkers
