Trying to wrap my head around this Law thing. Language enthusiast. Etymology nerd. My em dashes are all bespoke.

The NYT reporter who did the Alaska hit piece did a long sympathetic story on rural white Republicans facing California Dems’ new House map. It barely mentions the many more new GOP gerrymanders—mostly targeting Black & Latino Dems—at the end. Many other examples, like this sexist portrayal of AOC

New York Times screenshot showing:

They Wanted a Conservative State. They Might Get a Democratic Representative Instead.
The passage of Proposition 50, which redrew California's congressional map, means that all of the states conservative north is likely to be represented by Democrats.

Dec. 26, 2025Tweet from Adam Wren quoting text from a New York Times that says:

"I think that, uh, this is such a, a — you know, I think that — this is a, um - this is of course, a, uh, a very longstanding, um, policy of the United States, " Ms. Ocasio-Cortez said," writes @Kellen_Browning, "before saying that the country should try to avoid reaching that point with China in the first place."

Context: The style guide says not to include every little “um” and “um” in quotations except in very particular cases. The NYT never includes them for Trump’s ramblings but added them for AOC to make her look dumb using sexist tropes.

Contrast this - acknowledged to be illegal by everyone - to the "uncovering a scandal" tone the times gave the revelation that the Peltola campaign helped recruit Dan Sullivan II which they acknowledge to not be illegal

This is doubly true now that the legacies haven't just capitulated to but in effect sided with the fash. You would never get a true understanding of Trump's degeneracy by reading archival NYT/WaPo clippings or watching CNN

We all owe a tremendous, almost unfathomable, debt to @atrupar.com. Nothing gets past him, & it’s contributed to the negative opinions of Trump & other Repubs. Historians will not only rely on his work, they’ll credit him for playing an important role in the survival of US democracy

My guess is this comes from massive Black turnout in early voting (perhaps unsurprisingly, people in the state Calais directly fucked over are pissed about Calais) combined with a lack of high quality polling that means *maybe* something weird is happening and nobody noticed

Here's a fun one: more Hispanic women under the age of 30 (12,053) have voted already in Tarrant County, TX, than voted (11,970) in the entirety of the 2022 election there.

The citizen who yelled "Shove that ballroom up your fat ass" is, in this hard time, a patriot. Honestly, what is left to say about this level of misrule? What careful critique hasn't been already offered? What reasoned response to this full-on run at fascism and kleptocracy remained unspoken?
