I’ve been posting Chronoblazer builds occasionally on the game’s itch page. The page itself is outdated and I’m not doing any sort of big feedback push, but always happy to hear thoughts. Also, I posted a Mac build today and I have no idea if it works for modern Macs. Testing is very appreciated!

Spent some time today learning how to make a Mac build of my Game Maker game on an old Mac… now reading maybe it will only run on other similarly old Macs but not newer ones? Lame if true. I guess I at least like… learned how to do it.

Trying to get an older Mac (2015ish, MacOS Yosemite) up and running. I reformatted it because the disk was full of bloated system files. Quickly seemed to be impossible to update the actual OS through normal channels - Apple's website doesn't even load properly on the stock version of Safari!

“Now we have no more cookies to eat,” said Toad sadly. “Not even one.” “Yes,” said Frog, “but we have lots and lots of will power.” “You may keep it all, Frog,” said Toad. “I am going home now to bake a cake.”

I finally tried the new Game Maker UI stuff. It seems to have valid use cases for games targeting multiple screen ratios, but I found it to be a headache to use. Ended up making a new menu with the old methods. It has that "trying to arrange images in MS Word" unpredictable jumpiness to it.

Text-heavy, writing-focused games ride a fine line for me. A game can be “well written” in a way that other writers will fawn over, or in a way that a dungeon master would envy, but that could use an editor. I think a good game director can be the editor, but when the writer is the game director…

It's slanted to be pro-AI, but you can mostly not select any pro-AI answer and fill in comments on the final page. I noted the threats to income for creative workers, the rising cost of doing business due to skyrocketing hardware prices, and lack of protection for published works from scraping.

Canadian arts and culture folks: the federal government has launched a (methodologically flawed) survey on "the Cultural Sector's readiness for Artificial Intelligence". If you're ready to resist or refuse genAI, here's your chance to let them know. pch.research-recherche.ca/f/s.aspx?lan...

I don't recommend it to everyone, but something that's been useful for me as a designer is to pay attention to what some true genre sickos think about games. They're way too serious about liking a type of video game, but it's interesting to take a peek into their psyche and extract little nuggets.

Realized I might want an SD card or two, so I went online shopping for them. As expected, prices seem high compared to what I previously expected... except the official Nintendo Switch 2 one with a Mario emblem on it. It seems to be exactly the price it was released at. Maybe the licensing aspect?

Although instincts do improve over time, the skill of game design isn't just knowing intuitively what will be fun. It's spotting potential for fun, then validating and iterating until it's actually fun. (or whatever other non-"fun" adjective you're chasing)

game devs: what are the myths that a lot of players of games think are true about making games that are completely untrue? If you could snap your fingers and they suddenly all knew the truth about it what would it be?

I once had someone try my game for 30 seconds, put the controller down and tell me to remove possibly THE fundamental/load-bearing feature. It informed me that I probably need a way to hook people that are easily frustrated, so not all bad, but it was delivered with such confidence.

If you see this, please tell me the worst/most baffling bit of creative feedback you've ever recieved. Mine is still the time somebody told me my aliens had names that were too alien. Not that they were unpronounceable, just that they didn't sound enough like human names.

The World Cup moving goalposts: If you are an immigrant to the country you play for, it doesn't count because you aren't born there. If you moved away from your native country but decide to play for them anyway, it doesn't count because you were trained in another country.

Nintendo being the only console manufacturer that’s likely to support physical media several years from now, and said physical media being in a format that’s likely to become very expensive to produce, is not great.

this whole online ID verification push stuff is turning me into a weird crank at rapid speed because I've never seen such an unpopular policy forced through with such speed in so many countries simultaneously with basically zero real consent from any population, just pure elite collusion

Just got out of Supergirl. It was solid! Not as good as Superman last year, but as a lower stakes expansion of that universe it really worked for me. Almost had a late 80s/early 90s comic book movie feel to it. Just more sci-fi and with modern effects. Sets the character up nicely for future films.
