In light of my home country Bosnia and Herzegovina's splendid first game last night, I am excited to share my first grad students first first author preprint from my lab (many firsts 😄)

My primary academic conference is in a few weeks. I have given a good number of conference presentations over the years, and possibly moderated even more often than I've presented. Advice for anyone who wants it, in a thread:

Posting for Vibhu Sahni: Due to unforeseen circumstances the Burke Neurological Institute will have to terminate its research operations 5/22. There are international postdocs on visas who are looking for new homes. Please reach out to Vibhu if you can help

New paper (with lots of cute animal videos!) Ever watch your dog "run" while asleep and wonder what’s going on in their brain? In Current Bio we suggest that those twitches aren't just leaky dreams—they’re a vital maintenance system for the most precise movements www.cell.com/current-biol...

REM-sleep twitching in adults and the maintenance of specialized sensorimotor systems

Blumberg et al. present video evidence of twitching during adult sleep in a diverse sample of animals. Adult twitching appears to selectively involve appendages used for active sensing, mirroring thei...

I have seen too many junior-to-mid career people making this mistake so I need to get this message out there: Once you get your first big award (R01, CAREER, standard NSF, BL2 DoD), your most important task is to publish papers that cite that grant for support.

📈🧠 We're looking for brains! 🧠📈 Postdoc + PhD positions are available to help pioneer fetal MEG with optically pumped magnetometers, measuring prenatal responses to sound and light to understand how we start making sense of the world even before we're born. 🐣 Please get in touch to hear more!

Question for my photometry friends: Anyone able to do 2-region recordings (from the same animal) with a TDT RZ10X? What rotary joints are you using? Any tips/tricks to make it easier, especially in rats? Pls RT!

In the midst of (*waves hands*), our lab received our first NOA from NIMH, as well as our first major private foundation funding. Of course, given everything, hiring at UVA currently is...challenging, to quote our admins, but the first position for our lab is up!

🧵1/ BIG NEWS!! CDC just dropped a landmark report — the first US data on RSV hospitalizations after rollout of the maternal vaccine and infant antibody. What happened? Hospitalizations in babies under 3 months fell nearly 50% vs pre-pandemic years. Quietly, radically effective.

I have 2 amazing undergrads that will graduate in May and are looking for tech positions because they'd like to stay in science (not all is bleak!). I'd be happy to keep them but they'd like to leave Charlottesville and/or switch model systems

The Developmental Systems Neuroscience starter pack is up to 30 people! If you missed the original post, that's what @meikeesther.bsky.social and I are calling developmental neuroscientists who use systems neuroscience methods I thought now's a good time to post it again. Want to be added? DM me!

We’re calling this subfield (sub-subfield?) “Developmental Systems Neuroscience” and have put together a starter pack of some labs on Bluesky that we cited in the article. Of course, this list is still incomplete, so if want to be added, send Meike or me a DM. bsky.app/starter-pack...

Never have I ever...sent a paper out for review before a major holiday 😂 Poor timing aside, we are super happy to finally preprint this one: we dug deep into why prematurity increases risk for NDDs and it turns out-duh-bad PFC and inhibition
