EIC of Backpacker, journalist, hiker/skier/climber/paddler. Very tired dad. Jewish, probably too much. Opinions mine and mine only. Signal: adnroy.02

If you've read any great new public lands journalism in the past week or so—especially in out of the way places—please tell me about it. Thanks. Does not have to be set in the West.

There is so much more I could have said about this. I don't even broach the death threats to "Colorado backpackers", or the subject of former commissioner Phil Lyman, who damaged an Ancestral Puebloan archeological site on a "protest" ATV ride in 2015, then got a pardon five years later from Trump.

What does a controversial FBI raid that happened nearly 20 years ago have to do with the Trump administration's attempts to shrink a Utah national monument? More than you might think. New personal blog post from me:

I've been writing professionally for 20 years and to this day, this polemic in favor of Mountain Dew Baja Blast I wrote for a debate with former Backpacker EIC Jon Dorn remains one of my favorite things I've authored.

It’s Time for a Mountain Dew Smackdown

Our soft-drink warriors both believe this sugary, caffeine-packed soda is the perfect refreshment after exercise or adventure. (Hmm. OK.) They disagree about flavors, and be warned: it might get loud.

My friend @everywhereist.bsky.social tried 21 flavors of Mountain Dew and her review of them still makes me laugh: www.everywhereist.com/2022/07/i-tr...

*standing up on the plane* All right, you kids get to bed, I'll get the storybook. Y'all tucked in? Here we go. The fact that I not only recognize the species of spider on this slide, but recognize the exact photo she used, tells me that maybe I need to pick up a couple new hobbies.

Pompilidae are a family of wasps that parasitize spiders, and once you start noticing them, you'll see them constantly. Here's one dragging off an unlucky, paralyzed wolf spider in the Colorado mountains to be food for its larvae.

Here, btw, is the point of contention in the lawsuits against Trump's changes to Bears Ears. The Antiquities Act does not explicitly give the president authority to shrink or abolish national monuments, only to designate them. Trump's EO on left, law text on right.

WHEREAS, the Antiquities Act also permits the President, in the President’s discretion, to alter a prior declaration of a national monument by finding that objects identified in the prior declaration either are no longer deserving of the Antiquities Act’s protections, or never were; andSECTION 2
That the President of the United States is hereby authorized, in his discretion, to declare by public proclamation historic landmarks, historic and prehistoric structures, and other objects of historic or scientific interest that are situated upon the lands owned or controlled by the Government of the United States to be national monuments, and may reserve as a part thereof parcels of land, the limits of which in all cases shall be confined to the smallest area compatible with proper care and management of the objects to be protected: Provided, That when such objects are situated upon a tract covered by a bona fied unperfected claim or held in private ownership, the tract, or so much thereof as may be necessary for the proper care and management of the object, may be relinquished to the Government, and the Secretary of the Interior is hereby authorized to accept the relinquishment of such tracts in behalf of the Government of the United States.
(16 U.S.C. 431)

No further extension or establishment of national monuments in Wyoming may be undertaken except by express authorization of Congress.

The Trump administration has shrunk Bears Ears and Grand Staircase by more than 90 percent each via executive order—a significant escalation from its actions in 2017, when it reduced Bears Ears by 82 percent and Grand Staircase by about 46.
