I don’t want main character energy. I don’t want secondary character energy. I want gone character energy. I want “heard he’s writing a novel somewhere in Puerto Rico or New York or Portugal or in a small cabin in the Pyrenees” energy. I want hermit ghost energy.

This Independence Day, a recommendation: RAM KE NAAM, a 1991 doc about the Hindutva campaign to destroy the Mughal-era Babri Masjid & replace it with a temple to Ram. Months after the film, the mosque was destroyed by mobs on national TV. The fascists who incited this hate crime now rule India.

'Happy' independence day to everyone in India who isn't a saffron nazi. And to the twenty active Indians on this site. May this country find its independence from this oligarchic, fascist, casteist, ethnonationalist apartheid regime one day.

it isn't enought to know that in japan they don't do a three act structure. you need to understand what it means that *you* do, that *you* expect that to be the primary mode of storytelling, and why you ask certain questions of certain pieces and not others.
there is, I believe, a lot of discomfort found by people from the u.s. when, for example, magic exists without a system to it. when religion is not separated by clear lines. when ethnicity and belonging are not neatly segregated, but live side by side in a dialectical relationship
