I’ve been experimenting with graphic abstracts as a way of communicating research more accessibly. The response has encouraged me to make this a weekly series. I’m going back to the beginning, revisiting my work broadly chronologically & tracing how the questions, methods and ideas evolved.

My mum never forgot caring for a man in an iron lung as a student nurse at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast. Having seen polio at close quarters, she could not understand why anyone would refuse vaccination. This article is a powerful reminder of what vaccines prevent.
This woman contracted polio as a child about two years before a vaccine became available and spent much of her life in and out of an iron lung to survive. I truly can't fathom anti-vaxxers who seem happy to resurrect these diseases. people.com/the-last-us-...
Thank you to everyone who supported and encouraged me during the RCPI Presidential campaign. I am disappointed, but very glad I stood. Congratulations to Professor Anthony O’Regan. I wish him every success. I remain committed to contributing constructively to RCPI.
Voting closes today at 12 noon in the @RCPI Presidential election. Thank you to everyone who has engaged with me during this campaign. My commitment is simple: to serve RCPI with inclusion, integrity and impact. If you have not yet voted, I would be grateful for your support.
Voting in the RCPI Presidential election closes tomorrow at 12 noon. Thank you to everyone who has engaged, challenged, encouraged and supported me. If you are eligible to vote and have not yet done so, I would be honoured to have your support.
As voting enters its final days, I am grateful for every conversation, question and message. @RCPI matters deeply: to trainees, trainers, Fellows, patients and the public. Voting closes Friday 3 July at 12 noon. I would be honoured to have your support.
Medicine is always held in trust. We inherit it, serve it for a time and hand it on. A College holds standards, memory and routes into the profession. Its task is to protect what matters, renew what needs renewing and change what must change.
The best part of this campaign has been listening. Fellows value #RCPI standards and history, but they also want a College that feels closer to their daily working lives. That is the work ahead: protect what matters, and make the College more connected, responsive and useful.
#Inclusion is not only goodwill. It requires deliberate leadership: attention to culture, representation, communication, access and voice. A College that represents physicians must understand the diversity of physicians’ lives, reflect that diversity and act to support it.
#Medicine has a public voice, and how we use it matters. A strong College should be thoughtful, credible and independent. It should support doctors while keeping patients, public trust and the common good at the centre.
#Medicine depends on #trust. That trust is built not only through expertise, but through listening, honesty, humility and respect. Patient partnership strengthens professional expertise. It brings lived experience, evidence and judgement together and is a core principle of #integratedcare
Academic medicine teaches us to question assumptions, examine evidence and be honest about uncertainty. It is not only about publications or grants. At its best, it connects inquiry with practice and helps make care better.

Fragmentation is one of the defining problems of modern healthcare. Patients and families often experience the gaps more than the services. #Integratedcare is not peripheral to medical #leadership. It is central to it. @ificinfo.bsky.social 9 pillars help us to understand and to act
Serving RCPI has been one of the great privileges of my professional life. College service is often quiet work: education, exams, governance, standards and support. I've also got to meet some really interesting people! But it matters because it holds trust across generations of doctors.
No medical career is built alone. I have been shaped by mentors who taught judgement, challenged assumptions, opened doors and modelled integrity. #Mentorship is one of the quiet infrastructures of #medicine. We should value it, protect it and pass it on.
A very special day celebrating the @ucddublin.bsky.social School of Medicine Class of 2026, made even more meaningful as my daughter graduated and I joined the academic procession. A proud parent and academic moment. #UCDMedicine #ClassOf2026
The first week has confirmed it: colleagues care deeply about training, regions, workforce, voice, wellbeing and the future of @rcpi.bsky.social These issues connect. So must we. #RCPI #Medicine #Leadership
Every summer I repost this article on how to spot drowning. Please read it and pass on. In the last few years I’ve had SIX messages from people who saved a kid’s life after clicking on the link from my feed. slate.com/technology/2...
Drowning Doesn’t Look Like Drowning
Drowning is not the violent, splashing call for help that most people expect.

Energising day @rcpi.bsky.social National Education Day 2026 on Friday. The event captured something important: medical careers are changing, but judgement, curiosity, compassion and service still matter. Great to see trainees’ research, QI and leadership so strongly showcased.
Vision without delivery is not enough. @rcpi.bsky.social can help shape better training, better working lives, better policy and better care. That is the impact I want us to pursue together. #RCPI #Healthcare #Impact
A College should feel relevant whether you are a trainee, a consultant, an academic physician, a retired Fellow, or practising outside Ireland. Inclusion is not a slogan. It is how institutions remain alive. @rcphysicians.bsky.social #Medicine
📢 Voting is now open in the @rcpi.bsky.social presidential election! I am standing for a College that is more inclusive, trusted and impactful: for doctors, patients and the future of medicine. If you are eligible, I would be most grateful for your vote. #RCPI #MedicalLeadership

Paper published The word “context” is used constantly in #integratedcare, #implementation & #improvement. But what do we mean by it? Our paper in #JournalofIntegratedCare compares key frameworks & argues that context is not background. It is dynamic, relational & often decisive. shorturl.at/H89N8
Honoured to be nominated for President-Designate of the @rcpi.bsky.social I care deeply about the future of our profession, the importance of collegiality and connection, and ensuring #RCPI remains a strong voice for physicians and patients. Looking forward to the conversations ahead.
