OK, so just as I have to yell at my fellow Americans "air conditioners *are* heat pumps!" to combat basic ignorance of what the tech actually is, Europeans need to hear "heat pumps *are* air conditioners" because y'all are making arguments which don't make sense if you see why heat pumps are good.
It's basically only journalists saying nobody in Britain wants to talk about rejoin

Complaining about nightlife when you *checks notes* choose to live in Soho is like living in South Kensington and complaining about the museums. Or moving to Hackney and grumbling about creatives. Living in Richmond and hating green space. It's all getting a bit silly, isn't it?

Torsten Bell@torstenbell.bsky.social · 2mo agoOur answer to those pressures is to accept that for future generations we have to deliver that investment but we don’t protect those generations by leaving the UK dependent on imported oil/gas. The exact path of North Sea transition matters but doesn’t buy us out of this reality
Ban-loving Britain. First, effectively ban proper AC. Then, ban the consequences of your own actions.

Air conditioning is great, but the single hose ones are not very efficient at all - partly because they suck in a load of hot air that they then cool. Fixed air con, or portable air con with with two hoses, are both much better

Sam Freedman@samfr.bsky.social · 2mo agoIt's interesting that getting rid of the triple lock has become the defining example of a sensible grown-up policy while at the same time it's widely accepted that trying to means-test the winter fuel allowance was a disaster for Labour.
I think that AC is de facto banned in new build housing says a lot about how austerity brained Britain has become (or always was?). No, actually we can have nice things if we want them and put the required systems in place.

George Eaton@georgeeaton.bsky.social · 3mo agoWes Streeting calls for the UK to rejoin the EU in his speech to the Progress conference. “We need a new special relationship with the EU, because Britain’s future lies with Europe - and one day back in the European Union”.
There is a tendency to blame Brexit for everything which encourages the savvy to downplay it, but we know that leaving the EU has reduced growth significantly, and hence tax revenue, and public finances are more strained as a result. 1/
What does “putting Britain at the heart of Europe” even mean if you’re not willing to move on your red lines?
