Ok, muss man halt wissen. www.rnd.de/politik/rent...

Bas will Rentenniveau bei 48 Prozent sichern

Switzerland's NZZ Sunday edition today with tongue-in-cheek speculations about a breakdown in negotiations between CDU and SPD in Germany, and the suitability of AfD as an alternative partner. It's all fake news - but for how much longer?

Bad news from Berlin: all parliamentary sessions cancelled till mid-May. This means no election of a new chancellor and no new government anytime soon. SPD and Scholz can continue as caretaker government, theoretically until the September budget. For history buffs: this is 1930 w/o Art. 48 WRV.

As expected, VAT levied on imports to the EU, the UK etc is quoted by the US as a tariff barrier. While this is wrong, there's a simple cure & bargaining chip: stop refunding VAT on exports to the US. Roughly similar effects to a US tariff, except the revenue accrues to the exporter!

Everyone be a bit less hysterical about Trump's auto tariffs. If prelim info is correct, that's only for assembled cars. Won't disrupt supply chains except for final assembly. Also, don't forget that 🇪🇺 has a 10% tariff on US cars. Not v nice but it's not the end of the world.

Can't emphasize enough how radical Germany's new debt strategy is. This has the potential to be even bigger than Nazi war finance in the 1930s. Schacht infamously financed the Nazi war machinery monetizing camouflaged treasury bills. But he imposed a cap and a 5yr time limit.

Opinion polls from before Germany's election (Infratest). 1) Social Democrats draw heavy criticism for unconditional handouts (Bürgergeld), seen as punishing the working poor. Same for neglecting the working class in general, Scholz not providing leadership.

1) Germany disunited 2) Social Democrats nearly wiped off the map. Their worst result since the repeal of Bismarck's ban on the party in 1890. Even under Nazi terror in the elections of March 1933 they did better. Farewell SPD?

Too soon to draw conclusions but comparisons with Woodrow Wilson's withdrawal from Europe after 1918 seem difficult to avoid. The US back then heavily protectionist & anti immigration as well. The Great Kahoona was an engineer turned politician. His name was Herbert Hoover.
