I had such a nice swim last night, in the rain. A huge fish kept coming to the surface every time I passed a particular point on the circuit. There was a swan and its two big cygnets (bygnets). A little mist rose in the corners after the rain.

I think it's basically clear now that A Fan is not a good thing to be. By all means like stuff. Get deeply into it. Write stories in it. But Fandom has no positive connotations for me any more. It's about obsession, ownership and wilfully amputating your own sense of proportion and reality.

The omerta of journalism puts the Corleones to shame. Someone I really like and respect in entertainment sent out a newsletter this morning giving it the "well, we were all reading the stories". No. I was not reading The Telegraph's obsessive re-reporting of every detail.
