🚨BREAKING🚨 The Rt Hon Steve Reed, Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, confirmed in Parliament just now that Oxfordshire's future council structure will be three unitaries, as part of "the most ambitious programme of local government reform in a generation".

Tonight, in Oxford Tommy Robinson and Laurence Fox addressed an empty chamber at almost midnight. This happened because Oxford residents, ordinary residents, showed up in their thousands to make clear that Oxford rejects the racist and divisive bile that Robinson and his ilk spread.

Around 180 residents marched in Oxford in support of trans rights today, following the government’s latest draft code of practice from the Equality and Human Rights Commission. Opponents have called the guidance ‘unworkable’ and say it amounts to an attack on trans and non binary people.

Reform now claiming they couldn’t find a candidate for Holywell - despite their own (conveniently now deleted) Facebook posts stating otherwise. Luckily screenshots are forever ;)

Alfe Davis claimed on BlueSky that Reform were unable to attain the two supporting signatories necessary to stand a candidate, writing "it's clear young ppl [sic| reject Reform". Speaking about Holywell, Cuneo-Flood told Cherwell: "No candidate is felded in Holywell because no student candidate was found. Heard Reform were going round the city centre last night trying to get 2 signatories for Holywell - clearly didn’t succeed and couldn’t find 2 supporters amid its thousands of people. The ward I’m running for is by far the youngest in Oxford - it’s clear young ppl reject Reform it’s vile racism!!

The candidate lists for the Oxford City Council elections on 7 May have been published. Labour, Greens, LibDems and Conservatives are standing in every ward, and Reform everywhere except Holywell. The Independent Oxford Alliance are only fielding 5 candidates. www.oxford.gov.uk/elections-vo...

The Government has told Oxford City Council it thinks its response on postponing elections was unclear – and that “in the absence of a clear request”, Government will assume May elections should proceed. Postponement had been mooted in the light of the upcoming reorganisation of England’s councils.

Letter from Secretary of State Steve Reed to Oxford City Council: Thank you for your representation on the postponement of elections in your area. My department has undertaken an initial review of all responses from councils, including responses from opposition groups and individual councillors. Some have made explicit requests for postponement, and others have made explicit requests for elections to go ahead. However, there are a small number of councils who have set out how postponement would release essential capacity to facilitate reorganisation, but did not make a clear request of whether or not they want their elections postponed. Your representation is one of these. I have been clear that this Government is taking a locally-led approach. In the absence of a clear request on whether your election should be postponed, I will assume that your council’s view is that your election should go ahead. I will take account of this alongside the other material in your representation and the other representations I have received in coming to a final decision. Please clarify your position by 10am on Tuesday 20 January.

It was obvious Council leadership hoped to fence sit this one, discretely aiming for postponement whilst attempting to wash their hands of any responsibility. Incredibly their bluff was called… by their own Labour government - but excellent we’ll have actual clarity on the matter by tomorrow.
