Lathrop administrators pulled copies of "The Bluest Eye" from an eleventh-grade classroom on Feb. 3. That came after students already had started reading the book. It had been assigned by their teacher. But the book has not been banned from Lathrop, Principal Jerry Hartsock said Tuesday. He said the book simply is not appropriate as required reading in a required class. He said he plans to place the book in the school li- brary. "It was a very controversial book, it contains lots of very graphic descriptions and ... lots of disturbing language," Hartsock said. "The Bluest Eye" is about a young African-American girl who prays every night for blue eyes. It contains explicit scenes of rape and incest and a lot of expli- guage, Hartsock said. The Detroit Free Press called "The Bluest Eye" a "profoundly successful work of fiction, and a tortured, tell-true beauty." Morrison won the Pulitzer Prize for her novel "Beloved" in 1988. Lathrop stresses the need for appropriate language among stu- dents, Hartsock said. "(The book) seemed counter to what our school was about." "The Bluest Eye" is not includ- ed in the school district's "Canon," a list of school board-approved books that teachers may use as re- quired classroom reading, Hartsock said. It's up to the principal to decide whether a teacher can require stu- dents to read a book not on the Canon, said Superintendent Rick Cross. "There are tight restrictions on what is offered and what is re- quired and what is read as part of a course," Cross said. Michael Lecorchick, Jr., a La- throp junior, said he was offended when school administrators took away his copy of the book. "We're always being told in school to empower ourselves..." said Lecorchick, 16. "We just had no say in this whatsoever." Sonya Norman, another La- throp junior, expressed her anger in a letter to the editor of the Fair- banks Daily News-Miner on Sun- day. "Doesn't a woman in America get raped approximately every five minutes?" Norman wrote. "Isn't the person who usually com- mits this crime a friend or some- one you know? Is this something we are not supposed to know?" "Why do they want to hold back our education? Isn't knowledge of the real world the reason we go to school? . . . "I feel that I am ma- ture enough to have read this book and really don't care who says I'm not." Noel Wien Public Library does not restrict books, regardless of age, said director Greg Hill. Two copies of "The Bluest Eye" were checked out on Tuesday, he said.Princeton professor Arnold Rampersad, an ex- pert on Morrison's writing, expressed concern yes- terday over any attempt to ban one of her books. "The presence of few four-letter words or the presence of some sex doesn't mean that a book is morally perilous," he said. "It's hard for me to believe anything in Morrison's books can't be taught to mature high school students by skilled teachers." This fawning book promo is basically tailor-made to infuriate everyone on this site. Here's the author casually hand-waving away an incident in which 2 billion gallons of water were released into a dry riverbed because Trump wanted to "turn on the taps" and painting the DOGE guy as the real victim.
