I enjoy our Jazz Clarinet Neighbor, who is currently practicing (jazzy) scales and has been playing a ton recently! Sadly it does not mix well with my neighborhood's constant Mr Softee background track.
I was beaten to it by the amazingly generous @mollytempleton.com but yes! The blog I was nervous about yesterday is a reality today. She’s free. She’s long. She contains multiple cat photos. www.patreon.com/MicaiahJohns...

A youtuber I enjoy just did an ad read for a ... psychic talk app? I genuinely thought it was a parody for a few seconds. So, no. I've liked a lot of her stuff, but psychics are predatory, a "psychic app" is probably AI, and I just can't. Alas, unsubscribed.
GASP If you die in the Democratic Socialists of America, do you also die in real life?? Are the Democratic Socialists of American in the room with us now?? Is the call coming from inside the Democratic Socialists of America??
Opinion: Mamdani's idea may sound appealing, but it's NYC taxpayers who will take the hit, subsidizing discounts they may never even use.
My August newsletter, part of what accidentally became a series on reading: www.beckyallenbooks.com/2026/08/01/r... (lol at that promo image. Youtube's hissy fit has, in fact, helped me stop endlessly scrolling for Content.)
Reading More (Consistently)
I don’t necessarily read more, but I always have something I’m reading. August, huh? I only say that because, now that I’m actually sending these monthly, I think I am contractually obl…

this is EXACTLY what they teach you to do in those anti-ICE trainings btw; demand a warrant, tell the people inside they don't need to open the door, make a huge fucking racket to get tons of witnesses and neighbors outside, and record the whole thing
"you fascist piece of shit, get the fuck out of new york" truer words

Lawyer, housewife, farmer, farmer. I don't think I'm well suited to ANY of those jobs tbh. But my grandfather the lawyer was also a part-time magician, which I would not be good at, but might at least enjoy.
Enough “what would you do on the commune questions” If you got sent back 100 years and were given your grandparent’s job, what are you doing?
💯 I fully believe that covid is when a shocking amount of people stopped looking at other human beings as real and started treating them like NPCs.
One of my Crank Theories of Everything, at least of Everything in the Recent Past, is that we are dealing (badly) with COVID trauma we’d mostly prefer to pretend never happened.
My household could still use some support. Here's our latest update, including wishlists since 2/3 humans and 1/2 cats have July birthdays.

Aww I got my first chatGPT spam about my books, I feel like a real author again!
Have we considered Manny Jacinto, in literally any role that's put him on film, ever? (that can't be right, etc.)
there is a recurring prompt around what’s the best that anyone has ever looked on camera and I never have an answer but I’m watching right now and I think it’s gotta be George Clooney in Ocean’s 11
Ugh, the first draft of a climactic action sequence 😫 I know I will improve it with revision but for now it's so awkward and terrible as I try to figure out the main beats and where characters are relative to each other. Feels bad!! But on the other hand I'm SO close to the end of the first draft!!
I decided to spend the summer reading a bunch of books I've bought over the last year or two that have been sitting on the shelf, not letting myself buy more or check out from the library. It's going okay, but wow my library "saved for later" list has GROWN.
My books were out of print but I hadn't gotten around to requesting rights reversion yet, so yep, PRH gets half. It is what it is (annoying). (I have my rights back now.)
Big winners in Anthropic settlement: publishers. Statement from Bloomsbury: 14,087 of its titles are included, for a windfall of $21 million ($1,500 each--half of $3,000/title payout) (via @publisherslunch.bsky.social) (correcting previous post w/ bad math) www.bloomsbury-ir.co.uk/media/press_...
I feel weird putting in a big-ish PTO request when a) I just got back from PTO and b) I'm still pretty new at this job, but on the other hand, the job is unlimited PTO and I refuse to let that be a trap where I take less than I would have otherwise.
Two wolves inside me. The first wants to enter my company's summer hydration challenge because I already drink 8+ glasses of water a day so why not enter a raffle for it; the second doesn't want to give my employer any additional data about my life or health because it's none of their business.
A thing I am thinking about today, as I'm ludicrously exhausted: in general it's less tiring to do virtual meetings than to travel for them, plus I can wear sweatpants and then hole up and be an introvert in the evening instead of being social at a team dinner. HOWEVER-
Sure, Gemini, I want to send an email to our partners with the very concise phrase "ab the ads", a normal and coherent thing to say.
Without saying your age, what’s your favorite movie that came out when you were 18?

I'm technically past the free cancellation time for my hotel so now I'm on hold hoping to talk to an agent their. Hilton hold music > delta hold music.
Guess who's not going to Minnesota this week! lol
My boss fully gave up on the customer service line and just drove to the airport, where the line to talk to an agent is *also* completely insane. We'll see if he comes up with anything but signs point to this trip being canceled. Womp womp.
Okay I wasn't exactly psyched about this but uh, I'm also not thrilled that my flight was canceled??? I'm now on standby for a later flight, and on hold to ask an agent about other options, but this is not super ideal??
Home from a lovely week at the Cape! Aaaand checked in for my flight for my work trip tomorrow 😭

It was Terminator 2, which my sister let me watch when she wasn’t supposed to and I loved it so much I had to tell my mom about it which, whoops, was also tattling.
Do you remember what *your* first R-rated movie was? I finally asked my mom (I couldn't remember), and she told me it was The Lost Boys when I was roughly the same age as my daughter (about 9). The movie traumatized her more than it did me, apparently
Update from the Cape: we still have an air quality alert on, but at least for the moment, the sun is bright and the sky is blue, which is a nice change after two days of orange haze!
