Two exceedingly brief showers of rain here today, not even enough to wet the patio properly. The only thing they achieved was dropping yet more dirty dust onto the car. Meanwhile the garden still looks a complete disaster.

There’s some excellent advice in this article. I’m just highly irritated by the My Heritage adverts: “just enter a name and let our technology do the rest.” 🤬

I’ve had possibly *the* most perfect summer Sunday today. Lunch with Mr H, three of his ex-colleagues and their spouses, all of whom worked together at Nokia back in the day. Fantastic food, so many stories and memories, all washed down with bubbles in the sunshine. 🥂🥰☀️

I’ve been out socialising for much of the day, catching up with a friend from university. In #FamilyHistory news, I’ve found that Mr H’s 2x great grandfather Ralph Manley Cope married Mary Ann Cope. She was a spinster, so born with the same surname. Were they related? More research needed!

It has been too little noticed that one of the three Chiltern Hundreds is Burnham.

A hundred years ago? One grandfather was serving in the RAF and the other was a grocer’s delivery driver. Meanwhile, one of my grandmothers was serving an apprenticeship to become a hairdresser with Maison Hervé in Albany Street London. The salon boasted royal patronage, no less. #FamilyHistory

#FenlandSkies - after a brief spell of rain, we had a family walk before lunch. I’m sure wheat was never harvested until August when I was a child!

Now home, and sadly not a drop of rain fell here. The garden is a dust-bowl; most plants in the borders are frazzled, and the foxes have been sitting on the agapanthus - one of the few remaining plants that are coping with the drought. 🤦🏼‍♀️

Born #OnThisDay in 1916, my grandmother - Marjorie Joan Scoble. This picture was taken at the house that my grandfather built after WW2, when the family moved from Devon to Cornwall.

My best discovery for #OnePlaceWednesday today was discovering that there was an *American Skating Palace* in my #OnePlaceStudy! It was an indoor roller skating rink with a wooden floor, and only lasted for a few years.

So lovely to have an informal #FamilyHistory chit-chat with @fhsofcheshire.bsky.social this evening. I really enjoy all the talks, but it’s also fun to have a different format. Tonight’s theme was weddings, and we covered gifts, outfits, hastily rearranged ceremonies and more besides.

#FamilyHistory research can be tough at times. Over the past couple of days I’ve seen a bankruptcy (leading to a marital split), and two deaths that may have been accidental but could easily have been suicide. Hardest of all was a birth certificate where the mother’s name was followed by ‘deceased’.
