Demography of sexuality, sociology of law. Views are my own.

I reanalyzed the CDC data behind the LGB “free fall” headline. It rests on a change in bisexual identification among one grade, in one wave, of one survey. Gay or lesbian identification did not change significantly. Calling it a "free fall" is sensational and just gives bad actors talking points.

Six small line charts showing the percent of U.S. high school students choosing each sexual identity response option by grade (9th to 12th), 2015 to 2025, with 95% confidence intervals. Heterosexual falls from about 85 to 90 percent before 2021 to about 73 percent in 2021 and 2023, then rises to about 78 to 80 percent in 2025. Gay or lesbian stays between about 2 and 5 percent throughout. Bisexual rises to about 12 percent in 2021 in every grade, then among 9th graders falls to about 7 percent in 2025, its 2019 level, while other grades stay near 10 percent. “Some other way,” added in 2021, falls from about 4 percent to about 2.5 percent. “Not sure” stays near 3 to 5 percent. A dotted line marks 2021, when CDC changed the response options.

Young teenagers are less likely to identify as lesbian, gay or bisexual than a few years ago, according to a new analysis. “It really does look like a free fall,” Jean Twenge, a professor of psychology, said. “But what’s causing it is unclear.”

This new documentary about single working class men in China is compelling. But it attributes their hardship to the shortage of men, explained only as: "[China's] one-child policy left it with over 30 million more men than women." A one-child policy by itself does not affect the sex ratio... /1

How to Find a Date in a Country With Over
30 Million Extra Men
Dec. 4, 2025
A decade after the one-child policy officially ended, China has over 30 million more men than women.
These so-called surplus men compete for fewer women - and fewer opportunities for marriage and love.

‘For policy, it means shifting the question from “How can we change or reverse current trends?” to “How can societies remain prosperous, equitable, and sustainable under conditions of low fertility, population aging and, in many places, population decline?”’ Yes! That’s the right question.

The demographic future that we do not know about

The demographic future of the planet has rarely been as questioned as it is today. For much of the 20th century, the demographic transition theory provided a clear narrative: With modernization and de...

New article with former graduate student, Nasim Koohi! We find that individual and contextual characteristics are related to sexual fluidity for sexual minority men but not women, and fluid sexual minority women (and not men) have some better health outcomes than non-fluid women.

I began this study planning to compare the experiences of asexual men, asexual women, and nonbinary asexuals. But some people didn't fit any gender category. They were resistant to defining themselves through gender. You can read the full article here: journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...
