And yet we still hear ALL the time this outdated idea that arthropods, or worse, all pre-Cenozoic animals were "bigger because of more atmospheric oxygen". We need more popular content creators and TV shows dismantling this view.

And of course, the 2026 revision's conclusion are bringing A LOT of new thoughts in scorpions' evolution: how we need to rethink size evolution among arthropods, how early scorpions were extremely different animals in terms of ecology, etc etc #Cheliceratime 5/6

Obviously, what P. gigas is famous for is its size. Scorpions always had the record of largest land chelicerates of all time, but giant forms were previously known from undoubtful identifications of Carboniferous genera, such as Pulmonoscorpius & Gigantoscorpio. The revision of Praearcturus gigas shows this tendency goes back (and was even stronger) way before the Carboniferous. In fact, P. gigas was the biggest animal in its entire ecosystem, both in or outside water, even bigger than eurypterids... which is kinda suspicious because 415 million years ago, land ecosystems were near from developed enough to support a cat to dog-sized predator. This detail supports however a way cooler hypothesis: this scorpion was semi-aquatic.

I remember someone told me, when I was near the end of my Master's degree, that taxonomy wasn't interesting and not that useful to science. It's one of the minor things that discouraged me to pursue in Academia, because it's what I mostly wanted to do, because doing fancy analyses is cool, but 1/2

It may be surprising to some that there are thousands of undescribed species just sitting in museums awaiting description. One of the main reasons this problem exists is that taxonomy is undervalued and underfunded, a trend that coincides with the devaluing of studies on natural history.
