⚡How can regulators assess whether smart grids really deliver? As #EnergyTransition increases demand & #renewables, smart use of existing #grids is 🔑 for unlocking capacity. ACER proposes output KPIs for grid-enhancing technologies in #electricity transmission. www.acer.europa.eu/news/acer-in...
You've often seen charts showing how the IEA's scenarios underestimate renewable energy - but they also tend *not* to overestimate fossil fuels. Eg: gas consumption is higher than the IEA's 'current policies' scenario from 2015 (and every other scenario they published)
As of August, do we know what fossil CO2 emissions will do in 2025? I made an estimate in July, using IEA projections of fossil fuel use, to estimate 0.8% growth in 2025. Carbon Monitor has an estimate based on Jan-Jun data, 0.7%. But what about countries? www.eenews.net/articles/in-... 1/

Inactive and abandoned oil and gas wells in Canada are a much bigger climate problem than previously thought, emitting seven times more methane than the official estimates, according to a new study fr...

New paper. I wish this wasn't the case, but most progress on reducing US greenhouse gas emissions is likely spurious. Why? EPA underestimates methane emissions from oil and gas. Relevant today as Repubs vote to gut IRA's methane monitoring/mitigation program. 🧵 authors.elsevier.com/a/1lL4K_6se4...
National Energy and Climate Plans are crucial planning tools for EU energy, yet few countries provide complete data. High-quality data is essential for confident planning and investment around the energy transition. https://ember-energy.org/latest-insights/eu-national-targets-show-gas-in-decline
Updated 🇪🇺 Commission agenda is now online. 📅 2040 targets — with an interesting “s” — confirmed for 2/07. But no news on the Russian energy package expected in June.

The US EIA posts LNG export prices - and they are pretty different for different EU countries! (my first guess would be that age and length of the contracts play an important role) www.eia.gov/dnav/ng/ng_m...
It seems that much public debate on the Iberian blackout is still illustrated by a figure that is most probably wrong [see @lionhirth.bsky.social post: www.linkedin.com/posts/lionhi... ]. For properly monitoring energy security we need reliable data. Join us Thu: www.bruegel.org/event/europe...

Spain's power is slowly coming back, but situation still far from normal. Out of the 33 GW scheduled for this evening peak, only 18 GW is available. Nuclear and coal-fired power plants still offline.
Around one-third of new car sales in China are fully electric, and about one-half have a battery. Check out more interesting figures on China: robbieandrew.github.io/china/ via @robbieandrew.bsky.social
Here are the modelled implications of the IMO's draft Net-Zero framework by @transenv.bsky.social. Looks like a modest impact in the short-term with most of the deviation from BAU coming under the next US presidential term. www.transportenvironment.org/articles/is-...
8) And this one is important. For all the talk about the powerful pro-Trump media ecosystem, the share of Americans who have heard negative business news coverage of the government has exploded. Evidently even the podcast bros can’t distract Americans from the realities of the stock market.
3) That was just the US version. What’s particularly impressive is that he’s managed this on a global scale. Starting to get the feeling that “Trump” annotation is going to be the chart equivalent of a layer of volcanic ash in the fossil record.
🚨 The IMO negotiations have reached a critical moment: The EU needs to stay on course to promote a global scale-up of renewable hydrogen and derivatives (e-fuels). 💰 The policy options on the table differ considerably, by a factor of 3 to 4 1/
In a new @forumenergii.bsky.social report @maciekjakubik.bsky.social, @zaniewicz.bsky.social, @keliauskaite.bsky.social , Szymon Kardas and I argue that Europe needs a profound rethink of its energy security strategy: www.forum-energii.eu/en/download/... Some highlights in the thread 1/14
The 🇪🇺 continues to OVERINVEST in gas as a short-term fix to secure fuel supply after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, despite alternative solutions 🚩 131 bcm of gas supply capacity will likely be underutilised by 2030, wasting public funds and driving up consumer costs 📈💶 ember-energy.org/lat...
🗳️ This makes the upcoming decision by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) so important for the global #H2 ramp-up: It will either ↗️ provide much-needed demand for #renewablehydrogen and derived fuels, or ↘️ delay their use by promoting #LNG and #biomass in the early years. 2/x
🚢 🏭 Renewable #hydrogen & derivatives will be needed as industrial feedstocks and marine fuels on the path to achieving #climateneutrality. Agora Industry, @theicct.org & @regassistproj.bsky.social have examined where using hydrogen would be most effective to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. 1/x
Czechia was hit pretty badly by drought and bark beetles a few years ago, but the forest carbon uptake has recovered somewhat in the last couple of years.

Europeans' belief in the importance of the EU has surged to record levels, according to a survey released yesterday. 74% now say their country benefits from being in 🇪🇺 - up from 50% in 2010. And the biggest reason is about security, *not* the economy. europa.eu/eurobaromete...
