Colleges should not have athletics. period. DI and DII athletics programs are a financial drain on universities. Competitive sports bears no relation to our academic mission. Take that $ and give it to expanding need-based financial aid. #edusky #academicsky

It's interesting moving from West Virginia, where all the industrial jobs getting offshored to places like Thailand created a certain Rust Belt vibe growing up, to suburban Bangkok where all the industrial jobs getting offshored to China has created a very similar Rust Belt-y atmosphere

The effective federal corporate income tax rate: 1950: 50% 1990: 25% 2020: 13% Stop asking "but how we will pay for it?" Restore the corporate tax rate. That is how we will pay for it.

Important correction to a number of posts I have seen today: Your grandfather did not leave you PS2 games, he left you stamps. There is no such thing as a “childhood Wii U.” The Wii U came out two years ago. There is no such thing as 00s dad rock. Dad rock is from the 1970s.

“But the Odyssey was successful and a win over the right-wing chuds who are awful! We can’t critique it for not getting the nuance in the poem!” ^ This is a Calvinist take. “There are absolutely good people and absolutely evil people and we need to defend the good and shun the evil.”

Actual diversity in academic departments doesn’t line up with political stances. It’s more like “I’m reading Buddhist critiques of existentialism; she’s doing economic anthropology; he’s doing Kristeva and horror. We three are in charge of the speaker series.”

"Grift" is entirely accurate here. An academic expert in my field would normally go for $500-$1k. A mid-range person (like me) might go for $0-$500. $50k is unthinkable, both to ask for and to give. These kinds of fees are why Turning Point, CR etc couldn't get speakers to campus, not "woke."
