Bristol-based sports journalist with a passion for birding. Mostly retired now and spending more time on my local Severnside patch, though still prone to twitching on occasion.

Like I suspect many Norfolk birders, today I sat on a high spot on my patch to scan for a distant Black Stork-and was overjoyed when I actually saw one! But I didn't expect it to fly towards me and drop out of the sky onto a tiny pool right next to me for few lovely mins, until a jogger flushed it!

The switch to a north east airflow produced a modest fall of passerines on the Severnside patch today. An early start at Aust yielded Whinchat, Garden Warbler, 2 Lsr Whitethroat, 9 Common Whitethroat, 6 Blackcap, 2 Willow Warbler, 8 Chiff, a Yellow Wag and a Whimbrel. Also Clouded Yellow. #ukbirding

So many tributes to Bill Oddie today. I laughed so much at the Goodies, a real family favourite at home when I was growing up. Bill's LBBB was an hilarious revelation as a young birder. Then to do a bird race with Bill, Dick Filby & Rod McCann (May 1990) was a blast & never forgotten. #ukbirding

BildA photo that was taken on our bird race here at Cley by Nikki Straughan who was the Norfolk Naturalist Trust's (now NWT of course) press officer at the time.

Rod McCann - co-finder of the Wood Thrush with Paul Dukes - is on the right, RBA founder Dick Filby is looking through the state of the art Nikon and is flanked by Bill. I'm at the left hand end in the days when I had hair...

We finished on 159 species in Norfolk that day, a record at the time and we missed Redstart in the Brecks - one bird off an amazing 160...

A memorable day, it really was.
