I criticize dpw as much as the next sane person, but if fountain square road construction caused people to not want to visit, that reflects poorly on our city's residents. At no time was it very difficult to get to fountain square as a destination by car, especially from the north.

His 10-year-old son played tennis. During tournaments, Jiang says he had a habit of shouting and criticizing his son’s mistakes as he played. He wanted to apply pressure to make him succeed—it was the way he’d been taught to raise kids, after all. It made sense.

But then, unprompted, his smart glasses sent him a message. The AI assistant in his company’s newest wearable had picked up on what he was doing, recognized that his behavior wasn’t helpful, and messaged him about what he should do differently. Stop shouting. Stop criticizing. Just be there, be present, and show that you support your son. That worked, Jiang says, and being called out like that has supposedly made him a better father and improved the relationship with his kid, all thanks to his yet-to-be-released Vonder AI glasses.

Race and the Mismeasure of School Quality*

In large urban districts, schools enrolling more White students tend to have higher performance ratings. We use an instrumental variables strategy leveraging centralized school assignment to explore this rela-tionship. Estimates from Denver and New York City suggest that the correlation between school performance ratings and White enrollment shares reflects selection bias rather than causal school value added.
In fact, value added in these two cities is essentially unrelated to White enrollment shares. A simple regression adjustment is shown to yield school ratings uncorrelated with race while predicting value added as well as or better than the corresponding unadjusted measures.

Parents are free to correct me, but I feel this pretty strongly, and I get pretty heated when my friends suggest I move to Carmel for da skools.

One thing I'll add is I bet there's a bunch of slack here from "stop engaging in useless optimization." (The amount of people who spend an extra $200k on housing in a town with "good schools" without looking at whether the school has high value add...)

Republicans, in their infinite wisdom, left a big gambling loophole in the Medicaid work requirements. I'm no fan of the gambling industry, but if you are on Medicaid and struggling to deal with the work requirements, taking a $580 bet on both sides of an outcome is one way of getting around them.

My AI take is that we don't need to regulate it per se, we just need to establish a clear structure for who is responsible when it breaks the law

No one is responding to Will’s second point, but that’s the really important one. Society has to balance between full employment (or universal welfare) and inflation. There’s good reasons progressives and socialists tend to focus on the first, and conservatives and reactionaries the second.

This is insane. Inflation is under 4%. We’ve genuinely created a monster here: a public that hallucinates intolerable inflation no matter what the actual figures are. It is a bullet to the head of the entire progressive project *and progressives can’t even be made to care.*
