This kylix (an ancient Greek wine drinking cup) depicts a nude Circe preparing her potion for Odysseus' men, who have been turned into anthropomorphic animals. Currently at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

There's a local potter who sells their pieces in a large warehouse/workshop, and the place is such a vibe.

Archaeology news! Researchers in Sardis (Turkey) have found a 5th century BCE statue of a young man, which was later cut in two and reused face down as part of the pavement of a Roman road! It is suspected to belong to the Lydian culture and still has fragments of its original polychromy!

Happy National Oyster 🦪 Day. I don’t eat oysters here in landlocked Iowa because I value my life, but the word comes from the Greek ὄστρεον (ostreon). A couple of years ago, they found a # of oyster shells at Pompeii in the Blue shrine—oysters were used for mortar. hyperallergic.com/stunning-pal...

The room was originally discovered during the 17th-century Bourbon period, although it wasn’t until recently that it was excavated by researchers.

Archaeologists also found a hefty pile of oysters, likely used to create mortar and plaster.

"Egyptian script was a complex language that evolved over its 36 centuries of use. It would be impossible to learn all of its grammar in one sitting, but it might be fun to test its most basic grammar rules by trying to transliterate your own name!"

"First we need to know the symbols closer to the letters that we use in our modern alphabet. These are phonograms, symbols that represent sounds."

"The letters with * are approximations to the sound. Usually written egyptian didn’t include vowels, so a name like “Rachel” would be written as “RCHL”"

"The next thing we need is a determinative. A symbol at the end of the name that will tell us what the person or thing with that name is, or a quality about it. Here you have a few common examples."

"And now we have everything we need to write our name! Aesthetics were very important with hieroglyphs, so put low, broad symbols underneath each other, so it looks neat. This is only the tip of the egyptian script iceberg, but give it a try and have fun with it!"

We've been inspired by last night's episode of the Great British Sewing Bee to take a look through the collection of Mexican textiles we care for. One of our favourites has to be this stunning huipil with embroidery that covers the entire surface of the garment.

A long, heavily embroidered tunic or blouse. Made from three panels of white cotton it is covered in rows of embroidery using heavy yarn predominantly in red, but also in orange, pink, and green.
